Terrible offense, above average defense, above average special teams equals 8-8 record in my mind. Miss the playoffs by a game.

I don't think the offense will be terrible. I would hope the defense and special teams would go back to being elite.

Below average (better than terrible) offense, elite D, and elite special teams equals a pretty good team.

Going into 06, all anyone talked about was how bad the offense would be and how the Bears had no deep threat and needed to make a run at Deion Branch, Ashley Lelie, or Jerry Porter.

Then they went on to destroy a bunch of teams by 20-30 points for the first half of the season (while the defense was healthy).

If the run game is remotely effective, the offense will be fine. It all hinges on just how much the line improves. With the run game, the play action deep pass will follow. Should be interesting to see, but I can definitely see them having an average offense, which would be enough to be a very good team (especially with their ridiculous return game) if the defense is healthy and dominant.

I hate getting buried at the end of a page...especially in a thread like this.

Look at our WR's and QB situaion..how can this offense be anything but terrible.

If it's terrible, it won't be because of those things.

I was about to re-word it that exact way. The special teams and defense (when healthy) would be elite, not just "above average."

The Bears won before with the same QB and less talent at WR. Every WR on the roster now is better than Rashied Davis (the #3 WR in 06) was then. At least 1/2 are better than Moose was in 06.

Or will it be because we are relying on a 2nd round draft pick RB and another RB with 2 major leg injuries? Or a rookie starting at one of the most dificult positions to play as a rookie(LT), on an offensive line that was brutal last season and made no major upgrades other than the draft.

Bingo.

I actually think the running game will improve and the offensive line has no where to go but up..but the WR's situation is just beyond brutal IMO.

Are you referring to 2005? I don't see how our current WR's are better than that. People keep downlplaying the loss of Berrian, but he is one of the best deep route runners in the NFL.

He's referring to 2006.

Well that is crazy..one could argue that Bernard Berrian was the offensive MVP of that team with his deep playmaking abilities.

Well, I think they clearly upgraded at RT with Tait's move over there, and I think they may have upgraded LT with Williams replacing Tait who never should have been a LT to begin with. That's potential upgrades at 40% of the group.

This team is difficult to judge right now. I could see anything from an absolute disaster of Wannstedtian proportions to a surprisingly impressive 10-win season. The TE are going to be good, but the line, QB, WR and RB could all be bottom of the barrel or slightly above average. The defense should prevent them from being a 10-12 loss team, but it wouldn't take a whole heck of a lot of negative surprises to see this team go 5-11. On the other hand, their offense is probably going to prevent them from being a 12 win team, but it wouldn't be that crazy if they returned to their 05/06 level.

Anyway, I just don't have a good idea of where these guys are right now, but I'm down on the team as a whole. I fear another 7-9 season is on the horizon.

Will Williams start day 1 at LT?

'Cuz if so, he could actually turn out to be a very good LT, but nevertheless GOrton might still need to run for his life this year.

Why wouldn't he? I don't see St. Clair beating him out, thats for sure.

Ideally it would be nice to be able to give him a little time to get up to speed before thrusting him into LT in the NFL. Nobody knows what his learning curve will be yet. Maybe he's awesome day 1, I don't know. I find it likely he'll struggle a bit early on though.

I don't know how ideal that is. Maybe for a QB that's true. But I have no problem with a first half of the first day draft pick starting at LT from day 1.

Draft position isn't the real question though. It's more how good he is coming out of college, how polished, how quickly he learns.

I still know little about Williams though and I'm not planning on visiting training camp this year either, so I'm basically just bringing it up out of curiosity.

That's true, but everything I read said he was the most capable of stepping in and starting at LT from the outset.
