Let's say that McCain and Obama win the nomination for their respective parties. Who would you vote for?

If you are a Democrat please feel free to participate in the discussion but please don't vote.

Very grudgingly, I'd vote McCain. I'm less than excited by him, but he'd still be marginally better than the Dems. I prefer Romney, but I can't say I'm a big fan of his either.

Republicans should have gone for Fred Thompson. Of course, he didn't help his case by not getting his name out there better.

I did think strongly about looking at who the Libertarians put up, but I don't think I'll agree enough with him and also don't think he'll have a chance to win (obviously, sorry OMC).

McCain would be better than Obama and definitely Clinton. Though I hate voting for the better of two evils.

I'm pretty sure Fred Thompson and myself agreed on zero issues. Maybe even like negative 3 issues.

I agreed with him on many issues. Not all, but the vast majority. I'm hoping either Romney or McCain choose him as VP (which is possible for McCain since he'll need to grab the conservative vote).

i will never support any candidate who is either anti-gay rights and/or anti-women's choice.

I'm disappointed in Republicans this year. They really are going to have this come down to a borderline-loony preacher and a RINO? I might vote Obama after all.

I was listening to Steve Czabn (sp?) on xm 142 and he was saying that, even though he's a Republican, he is going to vote in the Democratic primary (Va. has open primaries) for Obama. Figuring that Obama has a better chance of beating McCain than Clinton does.

In other words, its 3rd and long so the Republicans are lining up in the shotgun and are going to hand off to Dennis Gentry then punt after he gets stopped for no gain.

Did you mean he was going to vote for Clinton? If the thinks Obama has a better chance of beating McCain, why would he vote Obama?

Because McCain sucks.

Because a lot of conservatives don't like McCain.

If McCain wins he gets to run again in 2012. If Obama wins the Republicans hopefully can come up with an actual conservative to run against him. Of course that assumes that 4 years is long enough for the voters to stop blaming the Republican party for Bush's presidency. It also assumes that they'll be able to find someone that is actually interesting.

McCain is far from ideal but he's probably more what this country needs ie someone that can bring the 2 sides closer together. If McCain loses however I doubt I'll mind Obama too much so long as he's more of a centrist once he gets elected.

Voting record is what keeps most senators from getting elected. But there's really no way of knowing how their perspective will change once they become President. The last senator to get elected President was JFK.

That also assumes that Obama isn't a highly popular President.

it's very easy to paint a senators voting record as negative. Clinton has tried in several debates, and Obama has done a good job of rebutting her claims. I think specifically of the debate where she put into question how many times Obama cast a "non-vote" in the Illinois senate, trying to frame him as someone who was either non-committal, absent, etc. He rebutted with the fact that if there was a good bill with some questionable aspects, he felt it best to non-vote, as he didn't want to look like he was against the principle of the bill, but also couldn't in good faith allow it through with the questionable portions intact

that's why i thought it was a good idea for obama to run now. the republicans bashed kerry's voting record and pinned the "flip flopper" label on him. if you're in the senate for 20 years, there are inevitably going to be some issues on which you change your opinion, and there will also be some votes that look really bad in hindsight.

he doesn't have either problem going against him right now, so all the republicans can do is trot out the tired mantra of "most liberal voting record." funny how he was the 16th and 10th most liberal senator his first two years, but then the year that he started campaigning for president, he leaped to #1 on the list! amazing that the same thing happened to john kerry!!!

that'd be fine if there wasn't so much uproar from that side of the aisle when W was running for office. his being unqualified, however legitimate, was blown up into a huge issue and there's nary a peep this time around with the two dem candidates. blatant hypocrisy, but there's politics for you i guess.

Yeah, I was hearing almost non-stop how Bush rode his daddy's coattails to Washington and hadn't done anything to deserve it. He needed to earn a chance for the White House like Al Gore did. At the time, I liked Bush quite a bit (how things have changed) but admitted I was concerned with his lack of experience.

Now, the same people who bemoaned Bush's inexperience are saying Obama's inexperience is irrelevant. Just like with Bush, I'm concerned about Obama not having done much of anything at a national level - especially at such a crucial time.
