it doesn't end the speculation he didn't sign a long term deal there and Towers might decide to try and trade him now while his vaule is at it's highest. Not likely but you never know.

The Padres are close to signing Khalil Greene to a one- or two-year deal, MLB.com reports.

The team wanted to lock him up for three or four years, but talks didn't get very far. Two years would take him up to free agency. Greene asked for $4.9 million and was offered $4.1 million for 2008.

Per rotoworld. I pray this ends speculation regarding him.

there is no speculation regarding. everyone knows we're not getting. it's just what we want.

I'm aware thats the case for most people.

Yeah, I just made this thread out of frustration. I'm just sick of hearing this Roberts BS, and nothing happening. I just have a dream that we could get Khalil, which would make me very happy.

Khalil Greene and the Padres are close on a two-year, $11 million contract.

Greene was due about $4.5 million this year, so the Padres are buying out his final year of arbitration for $6.5 million. It's a pretty good deal for them. Unfortunately, they were unable to get Greene to give up a year or two of free agency.

Oh, he's very popular in San Diego, but mostly for his defense. Most of the fans who would be fine with him being gone will cite his poor AVG and injury history as the reasons they should upgrade SS.

Teams don't sign guys to new contracts and then trade them. It's over.

Maybe they're just testing the Cubs, and others, to see if they really want him.

You know, like when God planted all those dinosaur fossils...to test our faith.

Damn...it's over.

and I can't stop screaming and crying tears of blood.

Is that because you are convinced that the weak hitting Felix Pie will be in the everyday line-up as well?

Bronson Arroyo begs to differ.

Which could be tolerated if Hendry hadn't been oblivious about SS for the last year+.

Fine. I will re-phrase:

"As a general rule, it is extremely rare for a team to sign a player to a new contract and then trade them. There is no reason for the Padres to trade Greene for anything the Cubs would reasonably offer. Hendry likes Ryan Theriot a lot and probably doesn't think he needs an upgrade at shortshop. I wish all of you would stop salivating over Khalil Greene. While this isn't as embarrassing as the Adam Dunn obsession, it's getting close."

Yankees picked up Gary Sheffield's option and then traded him!
