According to MLBtraderumors:

Padres GM Kevin Towers chatted at MLB.com today. The money quote:

The one position that we still may be looking at would be a corner outfielder. This would most likely come via a trade, rather than a free agent signing.

1. Cubs send: Cedeno, Marshall/Gallagher, Colvin to Orioles for Roberts

Hope MacPhail and Angelos approve this deal.

2. Pirates get: Headley (Padres), Patterson, Gallagher/Marshall, Theriot (Cubs)

Padres get: Jack Wilson, Bay (Pirates)

Cubs get: Greene (Padres)

Cubs end up with Roberts @ 2B and Greene @ SS.

Orioles get 3 high end prospects.

Padres get excellent corner OF and solid SS replacement.

Pirates load up with youth.

I would rather give the Padres something like Murton and Patterson/Colvin/something for Greene and let DeRosa play 2nd.

I would too except I don't think the Padres would go for that. Who would play SS for them to replace Greene?

jack wilson, who the pirates traded to the padres in the what-if scenario.

While I'm on board for getting Roberts, I'm really not convinced he's a difference maker. He rings a little too close to A-gonz, what with the decent pop, low obp, high K traits. That deal divests us of a lot of young talent and I don't think the slight upgrade is worth it.

the OBP of gonzalez and roberts couldn't be any more different.

i'm pretty sure he meant to talk about khalil greene and gonzalez

I wonder if they would have gone for Murton, Infante and some OK prospect.

I wonder why the Padres feel they still need to upgrade the corner outfield spot? Granted, their outfield looks very fragile with Geoff Jenkins, Jim Edmonds and Brian Giles, but Scott Hairston looked really good down the stretch for them last year, so I would think their biggest concern would be someone to protect in CF if Edmunds continues to look brittle. Chasing balls regularly in Coors Field can do that to an old CF.

Wait a minute. I just looked and I don't see Geoff Jenkins on their roster. I could have sworn they signed him. Where did Jenkins end up?

Jenkins signed a 2 year deal with Philadelphia.

Thanks. Well, I can see why the Padres are hunting for an improvement in LF. Hairston is nice as a 4th OF, but really weakens the team dramatically if he's a starter.
