Phil Rogers alludes to the possibility of the Sox trading Cabrera to the Cubs if they can not sign him longterm. I don't know if this has been discussed between the teams or if Rogers is puling this one out of thin air.

If Cabrera really is sincere about wanting to get onto the free-agent market the Sox might as well know that as soon as possible. It's possible that they could get Coco Crisp and Julio Lugo from Boston for Cabrera, or that they might get a rich package of prospects from the Cubs and let Juan Uribe play shortstop for another year.

I suggested that in another thread a while ago. How about Murton, Marshall, and Cedeno for Cabrera.

That would do it.

Not sure I trust that near-career high .345 OBP from last year. If he projects at .730 OPS, it's an upgrade over Theriot certainly, but the transaction would slide right into Hendry's marginal upgrades throughout the lineup off-season approach.

Actually his career high is back in 2003. He put up some mischievous number back then.

Why would we trade that much for Cabrera. I would rather have offered Eckstein 1 year 5mil than trade for Cabrera. Eckstein is better offensively for his Career. Signing him would have also allowed us not to trade for Roberts. Soriano, Eckstein, Lee, Fukodome, Ramirez, DeRosa, Soto, Pie would have looked good to me.

However, rather than trading or signing a marginal upgrade at SS I would rather take spend the money on a risk on Colon or Clement and then just let Theriot and Cedeno figure out who gets the job out of spring training.

You missed the bolded part.

Pros:

-Good defense (I think thats still the case)

-Decent BA and OBP last year

-Probably an upgrade over Theriot

Cons:

-Made 8.5 million last year

-32 years old

-Is a FA after the year

-Mediocre to poor power numbers

-Only one season with an over 100 OPS+ (2003)

Overall, I don't think he's worth what we'd give up for a marginal player who I'd have no interest in resigning after this season.

I'd trade Marshall and Patterson for Cabrera, but likely not much more.

There's no way I would include Murton or Gallagher in there.

Well, I might do Murton for Cabrera with no other players involved.

I'd probably do Fuld for Cabrera.

And yes, I know the White Sox likely wouldn't do any of those deals, and if that really is the case, I'd just pass on acquiring him.

Man, are we really going to sit here and say Cabrera and Theriot are comparable shortstops? Theriot is marginal defensively at best and Cabrera is a gold glove shortstop. Just because Cabrera doesn't hit for power, doesn't mean he's not valuable. You have to throw out power statistics sometimes. Sometimes you just need guys who can play an important defensive position at an above average clip - while being a productive role player offensively.

I don't like it. Especially if we have to give up all 3 of those guys. Maybe Cedeno and spare parts, but I wouldn't include Murton and Marshall for him.

We should also make something else clear, this trade is a figment of Phil Rogers imagination. When was the last time any trade he proposed ever actually got executed? He made up the scenario, so nobody should get uptight over the players names being mentioned. I see a less than 3% chance of this trade happening due to the teams involved. Phil Rogers has absolutely no insider information...ever.

I think I recall Tim saying that cabrera's defense is so over-the-top good that he is one of the few players whose relatively weak bat is tolerable.

Well like I said, hes 32 years old, the age where defense presumably starts to slip, and he made $8.5 million last year and he is a FA next year. You want to throw Murton, Marshall and Cedeno (as was suggested by a poster in this thread) for a guy with possible declining defense and little offensive upside that might walk and get us a Type B draft pick after the season?

You must be thinking of Adam Everett. I just took a look at the 2006 UZRs and Cabrera was -8 runs/150 games. Miguel Tejada, who many consider so bad that he should play 3b was -3. Carlos Guillen who is getting moved to 1b was -6, and the 2b in a SS's clothes, Michael Young was -4. Adam Everett was +51.

I'd take Cabrera if it didn't cost much, but it probably will.

Well if Jon Garland = Orlando Cabrera, perhaps Kenny would be interested in a guy who, if he ever improves, may one day be Jon Garland Jr., Samardzija.

Sure you're not recallin Adam Everett? Cabrera is good defensively, I don't recall him rating out as great.

EDIT: And now I see Cabrera wasn't even good last year.

Although according to the Sports Guy, Theo's greatest sin was letting him get away, as Orlando's grittiness and defensive prowess were the reason the Red Sox won it all the first time.

Yes, personally, I would. Cedeno and Murton have next to no value to me (or most other teams for that matter). And I don't think Gallagher projects as a 1-3 starter, so also he's open season as far as I'm concerned. Cabrera gets us one step closer to the trophy with all the little metal flags on it. That's all I care about. Marginal prospects be damned.

Edit: Upon proofreading, it probably looks as if I'm saying Gallagher is also a marginal prospect. Not really my intention. He's a pretty good prospect, but you have to trade pretty good prospects (or better) to get valuable MLB talent.
