Assuming Brian Roberts is acquired to leadoff and play 2B, why not look at Michael Young as a SS? Not sure what it would take, or that we'd even have enough, but Young is a guy I'd much rather have than Tejada, and I'm not sure that there are really many SS who are available to us at this point.

Roberts

Lee

Ramirez

Fukudome

Soriano

Young

Soto

Pie (assuming he's still a Cub)

Not a bad lineup at all. What would it take, though?

1. Texas isn't going to trade him.

2. Khalil Greene's better.

3. Khalil Greene's perceived value by both his club, and other major league teams is lower than Young's.

4. Khalil Greene's cost in prospects is cheaper.

5. Khalil Greene's cost in dollars is cheaper.

6. Khalil Greene's age is on the left side of 30.

I think I ended this debate before it started, sorry Hosak.

1. San Diego doesn't want to trade Khalil Greene.

2. Khalil Greene's perceived value by his club is more than the Cubs could reasonably give up.

3. Towers just lost his prime target to Hendry and is very well aware of Hendry's love affair with Greene, further emphasizing point 2 and tacking on sentimental cost.

The Michael Young debate might be easy to end but I don't think the Khalil Greene clamoring is very feasible either.

Oh it would take Pie, Prior + Prospect at the maximum. Heck Pie, Prior + Cedeno? There's now way he'd turn that down.

IF that is all it would take, Jim would be stupid to turn it down. 25+ HR's and stellar defense at SS? It'd be worth it.

Who is the ambiguous "prospect"? It'd take more than Pie and Prior and I don't believe the Cubs would give up Pie, Prior, Cedeno if that were even good enough for them.

Everything I've read have Hendry only moving Pie if he's blown away with an offer. Greene is not that guy gets Hendry to dangle Pie. I am totally in the Greene for shortstop camp but he's not enough to get it done .

I'd trade Pie in a deal where he was the centerpiece by far for Greene in two seconds.

Michael Young lately has been a very good defender but the name seems bigger than the reward.

Furthermore how on earth do we have enough to get Brian Roberts and Michael Young, both? Why stop there? Let's get Nick Swisher, Erik Bedard, and Sid Finch too!

I like Michael Young, but agree with the sentiments that he is too expensive.

I don't think Hendry would give up what San Diego will want for Greene, even if it is Cedeno, Prior and Pie.

I know Cleveland said they weren't interested in trading Peralta, but I don't see why he would be that untouchable. The Indians were very happy with Asdrubal Cabrera last year when he took Barfield's spot at 2b. If they moved Cabrera to SS, they still have Barfield to put at 2b. Maybe Hendry could work a 3 way deal between Pittsburgh and Cleveland that looked something like this:

Pittsburgh gets Andy Marte, Kelly Shoppach, Ronny Cedeno and Matt Murton

Cubs get Jhonny Peralta

Cleveland gets Jason Bay

Pittsburgh could do a lot better than that for Jason Bay.

Cleveland could do a lot better than that for Jhonny Peralta.

From the Cubs' standpoint though, thumbs up!

If I were the Indians I wouldn't be quick to trot Barfield out there again - I never thought he was a great prospect to begin with, I think he deserves the 1 strike and you're out program.

You could be right. I just threw that out there because I think of the 2 other SS's mentioned, Peralta might be easier to land. I also didn't really spend a lot of time thinking about what players it would take.

At this point, I'm seriously debating whether or not I should start backing a Jack Wilson acquisition... that's how sad it's gotten.
