Club sources indicated by week's end that Rasmus could lose his "untouchable" label in a potential deal for Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Erik Bedard. Such a deal would have to include at least another prominent Cardinals prospect such as Bryan Anderson or Chris Perez. Of course, the Cardinals envision Perez as a potential heir to closer Jason Isringhausen next season. Rasmus is being groomed to take over for center fielder Jim Edmonds. Isringhausen and Edmonds are owed a combined $16 million in 2008.

Let's hope they do. They'll win 75 games instead of just 70, and have an even more bleak future.

Mozeliak is oblivious.

I'd love for them to trade Rasmus and Reyes for 2 years of Bedard.

...while watching Rasmus become the next Haren for Baltimore.

Good to see you back on the board and in the country Jehrico.

I'm gonna disagree that it's a good thing for Bedard to be a Cardinal. I understand it's 2 years of him vs. 6 of Rasmus, and that Rasmus looks like he'll be a stud, but Bedard is a stud already, and in the NL I think he could be filthy for years to come with the Cards. Rather they spend their money on Izturis and Aaron Miles than locking up a guy like Bedard.

If that's all it takes to get Bedard I hope Jimbo throws Hill and Colvin along with guys rumored to get Roberts to get both Bedard and Roberts.

I'd even be willing to throw a third prospect if necessary.

Bedard's pretty much on record saying that he's going to test free agency no matter what though. He's not going to make the Cards contenders before that happens, and then he'll be getting his payday, which we know won't be coming from St. Louis.

Lot can change in 2 years. I'm not saying he will change his mind, but if he's a moron and falls in love with the Cardinals...

Joe Strauss said this so there's close to a zero percent chance that it happens. Not to mention that I have no clue what the Orioles would want with Anderson, and that I find it hard to believe Perez is a really great trade chip.

By then they will have unloaded Rolen and Edmonds. They found a way to pay Pujols and Carpenter, I'd bet they'd find a way to pay Bedard.

Neither of those players hit the open market. Unless Bedard's lying, he'll get to free agency, and there's no way the Cards retain him in that case.

If I had to play for the Orioles, I'd tell everyone who'd listen that I was going to become a FA too. It's a negotiating ploy, and means little to me.

Why would you say that if you wanted to get out of Baltimore?

I do agree that it's all talk though. If you are a pitcher (especially one like Bedard that's never thrown 200 innings), you'd be pretty stupid to not listen to reasonable extension offers when you are still a year or two away from free agency. There's a reason these guys don't hit the market.

Honestly, how much better is Bedard over Hill?

Without looking it up, I think Bedard is younger than Hill. He's more established in the tougher league. Bedard does better without his good stuff than Hill does- hence the "Hill is too inconsistent" theory.

I can't help but wonder if Bedard is damaged goods. So what if he's the leading seller at the jerk store. How can you trade your best pitcher, who's also young unless you get a really good haul in return.

Maybe he hates the organization that much were they want to get rid of him? I agree it's possible that he has some possible injury but the O's might be playing a Hendry here and looking for team chemistry. Also, by trading him now they get a lot of bang for the buck since he'll have to play for whoever he goes to for 2 years.

You should look it up. Bedard is a year older than Hill. Interestingly, at age 27 (2006 for Bedard, 2007 for Hill) they had almost exactly the same season in terms of ERA+, IP, BB and Hill was actually better at WHIP (less hits allowed) and Ks. Thus, age and consistency are both lacking foundation in the comparison. The original question is very valid, and Hill has a lot less wear and tear for his age and has a couple of years more under the Cubs control. Given Hill's terrific 2005 AAA season as a history of dominance, he could very well progress to Bedard's 2007 level from here. I'm less inclined to want to trade him now that Cabrera is off the market.
