Cuban, who became a Cubs fan while in college at Indiana, also downplayed the fact he's not from Chicago.

"I wasn't from Dallas either," he said. "When it's your team, it's your team. Not all the players on the Bulls are from Chicago, and they sure manage to get awfully committed to their jobs."

Cuban said he had learned plenty in his years as Mavericks owner and opened a window to some of his business philosophy by pointing to the 1,500 upper-deck seats he now sells for $2 and also certain walk-up seats for $5.

"If I'm really smart, maybe someday all the tickets in the upper deck will be $2 and we'll pay for it with advertising, call it the HDNet Upper Deck or whatever," Cuban said. "The total revenue from the upper deck is like $180,000 a game or something. It's not enormous. So if you know anybody who wants to spend $200,000 per game, $8 million a year, I'll make those seats free."

free games at wrigley would be so awesome...i'd sleep outside of the ballpark every nite during the summer.

plz let him buy the cubs

Yeah, this guy would revolutionize the Cubs, and maybe the entire league.

Come to think of it, that's probably one reason they'll block him from buying the Cubs. Owners don't want Cuban's kind of out-of-the-box thinking.

i'm sure stupid cub fans would disapprove of the free upper deck tickets because god forbid we have a banner or sign on it that advertises something.

They just played a clip of Cuban on ESPN 1000. He said he isn't interested in acquiring any other team.

Also said something really interesting: He said he'd look into putting "Cubbie" (drives me nuts that he refers to them as that...I think he thinks it will endear him to Cubs fans, but whatever) away games on in 3D in movie theaters.

If he can make quantum leaps into Hollywood, the Internet, high-definition TV, movie theaters and pro basketball while managing to pull off ``Dancing With The Stars'' without embarrassing himself, you think Cuban cares about what we're writing and saying regarding conventional baseball wisdom? You know, that the good old boys who run the sport would rather sleep with rattlesnakes and dine with Scott Boras than let him own the Chicago National League Ball Club Inc.?

``Why would I be involved in something if I didn't think I can be successful?'' said Cuban, smiling easily Monday night as he sat behind one of the United Center baskets, his feet propped on a table. ``People can write what they want about it. You have to put something in the newspaper. I have my own opinions about it.''

"Sale prices for basketball, hockey and baseball [franchises] … they're worth so much money now, you have to be involved. You can't just turn it over to someone and say, `He was an All-Star, we'll just let a player run it.' Players aren't prepared to run billion-dollar enterprises."

Easily my favorite quote in the whole article.

What? My tickets (upper deck box) are $40 per seat per game. How many seats are in the upper deck? His numbers are funny or his definition of Upper deck is not as expansive as it sounds.

I didn't think it was possible to love the idea of Cuban as the owner of the Cubs even more...but hey, look, here we are.

I don't know, I'm oddly confident that he gets it. I think he REALLLY wants this team and his offer is gonna be head and shoulders above anyone else's.

I wouldn't exactly put too much into the ticket price comments, as he'll have no significant parking revenue to work with. Of course, he still hasn't seen the financial documents yet, so there's really nothing to go on at this point.

He sure seems to have a lot of interesting, out-of-the-box ideas, though.

I dont think and hope Selig is as dumb as we make him out to be. I am sure Stern would agree that Cuban can be a headache, but is now one of the most important assets to the entire league. I don't think many owners around the NFL care for Jerry Jones but he is hugely important to the success the NFL and creating more profit for owners. I really believe Cuban has the same impact and would be a huge asset to MLB as a whole. The success of the Cubs is a very important and vested interest amongst owners in baseball. Cuban elevates that to another level.

Not only will his offer top the rest, but I think he will sell Selig pretty well once he has the chance. It's hard to think he could be the front runner, but I think he is a very close 2nd.

Yea, I'm sort of put off by his involvement in Redacted, but I can't think of anyone more ideal as a prospective owner in so many ways. It's funny too, because most casual fans want him here (and this is the way the media perceives it as well) because they think he'd come in here and spend lots of money. While that'd be a definite selling point, the main thing I like about Cuban are his philosophies.
