I am going to boo the crap out of Prior if he ever faces the Cubs in Wrigley again.

And then 3 hours later leave the park depressed because he just threw 8 innings of shutout ball

I won't boo him at all. The Cubs treated him like garbage.

How? Any insinuations that he was soft either came from secondary sources or was hinted at by people like Dusty because Prior refused to tell anyone what was wrong with him. The Cubs gave him every chance and shielded him from a lot of media scrutiny.

I think it went both ways. And I think Prior wanted out of Chicago long before the Cubs lowballed him in contract talks last offseason.

ha, how did they lowball him? He only pitched 43 innings in 2006. Didn't he ask for a raise in arbitration and ended up settling for a bit of a pay cut? Then he got his money last year and ended up pitching 0 innings for us and went under the knife. I don't see that as being lowballed at all.

When stuff comes out from secondary sources, many of those are leaks from people within the organization. Prior was treated like garbage by a front office that never appreciated what they had, and are still living in the stone age when it comes to so many things, most notably that when a pitcher's hurt, he is hurt, and pitching through it only makes things worse. Then when the guy went ahead and pitched through the pain, he's thrown further under the bus and gets called a headcase. It's an ugly ugly divorce and it pisses me off to see just how incompetently the Cubs handled their best pitching talent since Maddux.

I'm not positive, but didn't Prior get a raise before the 2007 season (which he didn't even pitch in?).

Wait, what? Prior refused to tell anyone what was wrong with him? So now he gets blamed for his injuries AND his doctor's diagnoses too?

The only possible justification for letting Prior go is if Hendry has information that has only been leaked to the public as unsourced rumors but that many people seem to believe anyway that Prior:

1) Hates the Cubs so much that he was determined to leave after this year regardless, or

2) Didn't recover well from his surgery and will have serious lingering issues for the rest of his career.

If either of those were the case, there's no good reason to resign him. But I think it is more likely that Hendry is just being stupid.

Hendry seems to bend over backwards for every player and yet a pitcher of Prior's potential he's rough on him? It doesn't make any sense.

The information we do know:

Hendry wanted to sign Prior to a 2 year deal.

Now that he couldn't, he doesn't want to sign him at all.

That pretty much tells you what Hendry believes about Prior's chances of re-signing with the Cubs after 2008, and it's perfectly reasonable to think that some of his opinion came from things that the Prior camp has told him.

That's what I don't get. Hendry is a players GM. Players love the guy. Why would Prior be the exception? I mean Wood's been hurt for the past decade and still gets chances after chances. Who knows if we'll ever know what really went down.

This whole "Cubs treated Prior like garbage" thing is blown totally out of proportion. The Cubs did about everything they could and Hendry did not treat him any worse than anyone else. The handling by some of the staff could be considered detrimental emotionally and physically but this didn't come from the front office.

All of this is incorrect. All of it. Hendry even came out once in 2004 or 2005 and ripped Prior for coming out of a game when "nothing was wrong with him". They waited until 2007 (!) to have his shoulder properly examined and operated on.

I'd like to see this ripping that was done by Hendry. Also, Prior is a smart man and I'm sure he could have had his shoulder looked at on his own if this was the case.

First off, I don't remember that Hendry quote-I'd love to see it.

Second, the Cubs were the ones pushing surgery for years. Prior was the one who decided to go the non-surgical route in order to hopefully get back to pitching more quickly. It was not the Cubs fault whatsoever that Prior didn't agree to do exploratory surgery until 2007.

I'm pretty sure there was a lot of talk that Prior was using his own doctors and got the same word as the doctor's representing the Cubs. He tried to do everything to keep away from having surgery and it obviously backfired on him and the Cubs.

There were numerous quotes by Hendry that more or less insinuated he thought Prior was a big baby. I wouldn't call it direct ripping, but it was plainly obvious he shares your opinion that he's really just a wimp.

No, sorry, you're imagining a sentiment that didn't exist. I'm aware you wouldn't be convinced otherwise, especially since Prior is headed out, and I'm not sure what the point would be in debating arbitrary perceptions of a third-party's feelings - however, in all my dealings and with people I've talked to, I've never thought "the front office is sure treating Prior like garbage!" This is just the way some fans interpret the business.

I can't begin to imaginge the outrage if Prior went to his own doctors, got a diagnosis and told the team he was taking the year off to get his shoulder cleaned up. Pitchforks for everyone!

So the Cubs wanted surgery...then get upset when Prior wants it too? Again, it doesn't add up.

The Cubs wanted him to tought it out and pitch.

I'm done with this topic. I don't have the energy to discuss the painfully illogical notion a parting of the ways is somehow best for everybody involved. It's a shame, but it's hardly a fluke that something like this would have to the Cubs organization, and the people who run it.

I'm talking the fan perspective in my previous post. I've seen it mentioned numerous times about the Cubs pushing surgery, but don't really recall reading it. That doesn't add up to me, as the Cubs' doctors supposedly found nothing wrong, all I can really remember off the top of my head is the Cubs saying it was normal wear and tear on the elbow/shoulder/whatever they were checking out.

Yeah like jumping to conclusions when a writer writes something, read it the way I want it to be said and then use it as a fact. That just doesn't sound like a solid foundation to base a debate on to me.

In all your dealings? Please share your dealings with the front office of the Cubs in relation Prior. All you have to do is dig up a Paul Sullivan article crica. 2005-2006 regarding Prior. Where would Sullivan and half the radio morons get the "Prior is soft" stuff from if not from Hendry and crew, saying "we can't find anything 'physically' wrong with Mark"?

I think it would be safe to assume that this thing has probably not been handled very well by both sides. I believe that there was the belief, by management, that Prior was not really injured and should have tried to tough things out. I also believe Prior has wanted out of Chicago for the last 2-3 years. I don't think his father has helped matters out very much either.
