FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says the Padres are now targeting Matt Murton as they continue to try to fill their hole in left field.

Murton is available, but the Cubs don't know if they'll need him later to pull off a bigger deal. He's also in play in the Marlon Byrd talks with the Rangers.

Give us Khalil!!

Actually, I could see it happening. We obviously need more than Murton, but that would make a lot of sense

so...then we can forget about roberts and just go after bedard?!?!?

\:D/

Why not have Khalil and Roberts\Bedard?

i might explode with excitement if that could somehow actually happen...

or poop the pants...one or the other...

I don't see how. The Padres want Murton to fill a hole. Trading Greene would make a much bigger hole. There's not much the Cubs could trade them that would help them fill other holes on their roster, so the Padres chances of winning in 2008 would go down pretty much no matter what in a trade.

I thnk we are all missing the best part of the Rosenthal article!!

Don't be surprised if Cubs right-hander Jason Marquis is part of a package for Roberts — the Orioles value his innings, and other clubs also have expressed interest in Marquis since the Cubs' signing of Jon Lieber.

I'm willing to do both if it helps the cause.

Hell, give them the keys to the farm system if we can get Bedard, and I suppose if it makes them happy, we'll take Roberts off their hands as well. They can have Pie, Gallagher, Colvin, Veal, Marshall, Theriot whatever. Hill will be tough to part with, but if thats what it takes to land Bedard, so be it.

you get tired of me bashing soriano as a leadoff hitter? I get tired of those saying he is fine there. I also get tired of the khalil green bandwagon. How is my drum banging any different than the others in regards to these players? to the poster that thinks his fantasy baseball skills rival those of hendry/piniella...you are really out of touch w/ reality. why did piniella bat sori leadoff last year? 1. there were no other options 2. that was part of the negotiation when sori was signed & helped him choose chicago over others. He is also on record saying he'd move out of the leadoff spot if it was best for the team. Stoney is on record saying sori will move only if a legit/better leadoff hitter was brought to the team. Kasper indicated today that fuko might be considered if we don't deal for roberts. our best case scenario is roberts & bedard while keeping hill somehow. we are overvaluing pie imo & should part w/ him, cedeno, gallagher & marshall & others. If you haven't noticed...we are going for it all these days. We will not win w/ sori hitting leadoff, w/ our current starting staff, w/ derosa & theriot starting at the same time. derosa is a super sub...plain & simple.

Soriano played LF, not lead off

Man, I wish I would have played baseball at a professional level. Then I would have learned that I want inferior hitters to get more at bats than my best hitters. If only Fred McGriff would have endorsed a coaching video that my little league coaches could have bought and I wouldn't have broken my shoulder skiing then Wrigley23 could have been quoting whatever comment I'd be giving on the subject.

I just want something to happen. I'm tired of all the speculation. This has been going for what seems like forever.

Is Scott Hairston officially not able to play center (2 games there last year). He's got an .800 OPS against righties (don't want him, just throwing another name out there Hendry might have interest in).

Roberts really isn't coming to the Cubs is he?

--Yes he is. "It's a done deal", they are just working out the details before they announce the deal...sorry guys, I couldn't resist. Way to stoke the fire! I do hope however that we're either able to acquire either Bedard or Roberts.

Hey Matt, rest assured, Greene isn't going anywhere -- not yet anyway. He'll be back on a one-year deal after the two sides couldn't agree upon a three- or four-year deal. The Padres certainly want Greene to remain in San Diego, but they've been met with resistance by his agent over a longer deal, which leads to speculation that the team's first-round pick in 2002 might want to eventually play elsewhere. We'll see how that pans out. But in the short term, Greene -- who enjoyed his best offensive season as a Padre in 2007 -- will be at shortstop in 2008.

Apparently, anything the Cubs organization believes=irrefutable, gospel truth. Who cares that DeRosa was productive, the Cubs said he's a "super-sub," therefore he is! Anything those people lucky enough to have a connection into baseball believe must be right!

By the way, it was a good thing no one listened to that Bill Gates guy when he introduced that Windows garbage-he didn't even have a computer science degree! We really dodged a bullet there.

The idea that simply because someone is in the business automatically means they're smarter than anyone else regarding baseball is absolutely and utterly ridiculous.
