From MLB Trade Rumors:

Matt Garza For Delmon Young Blockbuster Close

Wow! That rumor really didn't die! La Velle E. Neal III says the Twins are close to a multiplayer deal. They'd send Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett, and Juan Rincon to the Rays for Delmon Young, Brendan Harris, and Jason Pridie. I can't remember any kind of young player blockbuster like this in recent memory.

It's exciting to see Bill Smith pull the trigger on a deal to get that possible elite slugger. Will he be more hesitant to trade Johan Santana now? Or maybe it doesn't matter since he'd require an elite young hurler like Phil Hughes in return. Beyond Young, you also have to applaud Smith for getting Pridie, who immediately becomes the Twins' center fielder of the future. The 24 year-old came back from injuries this year to rake in Triple A. Just like that, the Twins have an outfield.

Meanwhile the Rays suddenly have an awesome young trio fronting their rotation in Scott Kazmir, Jamie Shields, and Garza. Rincon's ability is questionable at this point but he could be the setup man the Rays are craving.

Since the Rays are trading their 2B, perhaps this could lead to the Cubs going after Crawford and offering a package using one of our dozen 2B.

Delmon Young-OF-Devil Rays Nov. 28 - 3:05 pm et

The Twins are close to landing Delmon Young from the Twins in a six-player deal that would send Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett and Juan Rincon to Tampa Bay.

The Twins would also pick up Brendan Harris and Jason Pridie, the Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III reports. Unless the Twins see Young as an option in center, he'd probably play left, with Jason Kubel DHing against right-handers. Nick Punto could replace Bartlett, leaving Harris to take over at second until Alexi Casilla is ready. The Rays would be opening up room in the outfield for Rocco Baldelli or Elijah Dukes. Jonny Gomes' chances of sticking around would also seem to increase.

Definitely sounds like it's close to being completed.

how is that considering the only player of value the rays got was Garza, who will only pitch every 5 days, vs. Young who will play in 162 games.

Because they might be a better team now

I doubt it.

Delmon is a replaceable asset for TB while they really needed additional pitching. I think this makes them a better team, but both Garza and Young have growing to do with their games.

Who has Young's upside in the outfield out side of maybe Dukes?

Which one of their pitchers has Garza's upside?

Sure Garza is young, but I don't see much about his numbers so far to get excited about. He is very hittable and allows way too many baserunners. Even Marquis had a better WHIP than Garza.

Good trade for both teams. Both trade from strength to greatly upgrade a weakness. Garza is a good pitching prospect.

What is the status of Francisco Liriano?

I just read on BP the other day that Liriano wasn't throwing breaking stuff again yet.

That's a departure for the Twins to take on someone with Young's character issues, even if he is very talented.

I think it's probably a good move for both teams.

Iwamura is going to slide over to 2b to make room for Longoria. We have 47 second basemen, but none of them are better than Iwamura.

currently? Kaszmir. Definelty Price down the road.

I was talking about players that could step into Garza's spot, not players currently in the rotation. But, yeah, David Price has the same upside

This seems like a good trade for both teams. The Twins could use help in the outfield, whereas the Rays haave plenty of young hitters but lack good young pitchers with the exception of Kazmir, Shields, Price and a few others. Rincon will help the Rays pen and Bartlett would be a stopgap for them, and Harris would be the same in Minnesota.

Are you a Rays fan? OK, so something like this.

3B Longoria

SS Bartlett (Brignac when? 2009?)

2B Iwamura

1B Pena

OF/DH: Baldelli, Dukes, Upton, Gomes, Crawford

Rincon (and Wheeler, right?) help out the atrocious bullpen. At some point you'll see a rotation of: Kazmir, Price, Garza, Shields, and Neimann? McGee? I don't know much about the last two guys.

2009 might be interesting.

Definitely McGee too. Probably Davis.

I'm higher on Niemann that most, IMO he's not too far back.

Frankly, I think the Rays are trading the wrong players. Trade Upton, whos peripherals are the definition of the term "unsustainable". Trade Crawford as hes getting expensive and closer to the end of his deal.

I don't even think their rotation is going to be that bad next year. I did analysis somewhere else, but they had over 1/4 of their starts come from starters who gave them something around a 7 ERA. Their rotation of Kazmir, Shields, Niemann, Sonnanstine, and Jackson wasn't going to be too terrible. It coiuld use an upgrade for sure, but McGee/Davis have 2009 ETAs, Price probably 2010. If I were the Rays I would have been talking to the Dodgers and the Twins about a possible three way deal....something like this

Rays get Garza, Billingsley, Kemp

Dodgers get Santana, Crawford

Twins get Kershaw, Upton, LaRoche, Davis

A rotation of Kazmir, Shields, Billingsley, Garza, Niemann would be pretty freakin sweet. And an OF of Kemp, Dukes/Pirdie, Young wouldn't be too shabby.

I guess I just think its selling short on Young. While he did have a pathetic year, he was 21 and has all the talent in the world as well as the minor league #s to back it up.

Trade on hold:

The six-player Delmon Young trade has yet to go through because of concerns regarding medical reports on Juan Rincon's elbow, according to CBS Sportsline.

The Rays are supposed to receive Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett and Rincon from Minnesota for Young, Brendan Harris and Jason Pridie. Neither team should be willing to let this fall apart because of Rincon. His WHIP has gone from 1.02 to 1.21 to 1.35 to 1.56 the last four years, while his strikeout rate has plummeted in the other direction. The Rays are getting the same haul here whether he's in the deal or not.

I think this is definitely advantage twins. Young has the potential to be a premier power hitter and he is already pretty good for a guy who was 21 for most of last season. It is nice to see the rays get some pitching help though.

Brendan harris will fit the twins mold well.
