Wow. The Yankees are having issues. Who would have thought a player would walk away from $16 million from the Yankees?

It will be interesting to see what Posada and Rivera do, but it's already been a bad offseason for the Yanks.

For the love of god, please do not say lets go out and get Pettitte

To be honest, I wouldn't mind Pettitte at the right price.

Didn't he say it was Yankees or retirement?

Yes he did. Rotoworld:

Yankees announced that LHP Andy Pettitte declined his $16 million player option for 2008.

Pettitte had to decide by Wednesday and wasn't going to be ready to make an announcement then. He'll still get his $16 million if he decides to play for the Yankees next season. "If Andy decides to play, I am confident we can reach an agreement with the Yankees within 24 hours," agent Randy Hendricks told the Daily News. "The only options, as Andy has stated, are the Yankees or retirement. He appreciates the Yankees willingness to give him the time he feels he needs. I do not expect him to make a decision for quite some time."

I may be alone in this, but I wouldn't mind seeing Rivera in a Cubs uniform next year. I love his health line:

Sep 22, 2006: Missed 14 games (right elbow injury).

Sep 7, 2006: Right elbow injury, day-to-day.

Jun 5, 2006: Missed 5 games (back injury).

Jun 1, 2006: Back injury,day-to-day.

Last year's 3+ era is a tough pill to swallow if your close doesn't have a 4+ era. Plus I'd love to have him if we happen to put together a playoff season where we can actually gain a lead in a playoff game.

So how long before one of the Steinbrenner's rips Pettitte?

WFAN is reporting that Rivera is close to signing a 3yr/40million extention. The funny thing is Rivera asked for a 4yr/40million dollar deal during the season and the Yanks and they declined to talk during the season. I guess that decision is going to cost them 10 million!

The player option was put in to protect Pettitte. He was not sure he wanted to play the second year when he signed the contract. Brian Cashman has said the Yankees will give Pettitte all the time he needs to decide if he wants to play next year. Cashman left the $16 million dollar contract on the table and both sides havesaid that a deal could be finalized in 24 hours of Pettitte's desicion to return!!

First off, welcome aboard.

Secondly, what is your overall opinion of the direction the Yankees seem to be moving this offseason?

It's obviously not all going to happen, but ARod is as good as gone, Torre is already somewhere else, Pettitte could retire, the Mets are willing to offer the world for Jorge Posada and the only player that looks like they will be back is an ever aging Mariano Rivera.

I've also read that the Yankees have no interest in any deals that involve Chamberlain, Hughes or Kennedy, which basically also takes them right out of any sweepstakes for players like Cabrera, Tejada or any other good player that might be available.

Can the Yankees be good with Morgan Ensberg at 3b and Jason Kendall behind the dish? :D

The Yankees will survive without A-rod. I am willing to go into the season with the three young guns in the rotation! As for Posada, yes he might be missed, but Catching is thin everywhere. Mo will be back. I was never a big A-rod guy-- We won more before him, he only put fans in the seats. I am happy to take his money and pay Santana!! Overall I am happy to see the big names go and younger guys that are hungry come in!! I hope the trend continues!! Moose, Giambi, Abreu, Damon and Matsui are next!! Oh, and FARNSWORTH-LESS, HE HAS TO GO!!!

i'm pretty sure A-Rod did more than put fans in seats. What was his WARP3 again?

I don't want to take anything away from A-Rod's stats. He is a BEAST (except his RISP). My point is that the Yankees won without him, and save the 30 million for pitching!! This team won with Scott B at third and went to the series with Aaron F'in Boone. I feel it is time to go back to the winning ways of "THE TEAM" concept. 1998 Yankees, no 40 hr guys but were 125-50 (including playoffs)!!!
