I'll refrain from going insane until I see official word, simply because there is no possible way the Cubs could be dumb enough to do this.

Really? They couldn't?

Alfonseca, Perez, Blanco, Rusch

There's plenty of reason to think they, or more specifically Jim Hendry, would be this stupid.

Trachsel's option is for like twice as much as those guys'. Hendry wasn't dumb enough to keep Izturis at that rate (I think his option was 4.15M or something for 08) and I can't believe he'll be dumb enough to keep Trachsel.

I might be wrong but I think Alfonseca got at least $4 M for 2003, if not more. I can't find it right now...Google fails me yet again.

Cot's FTW.

1 year, $4M for 2003.

Wouldn't it just be so Cub-like to keep Steve Trachsel at $4+ mil and non-tender Mark Prior because they don't want to pay him a similar amount?

Huh, didn't know they went back in time. Coolio!

After reading the actual article, I feel a little bit more like it may be untrue.

Look for the Cubs to exercise their $4.75 million option on right-hander Steve Trachsel and $1.2 million option on first baseman Daryle Ward. If the Cubs don't want Trachsel as their fifth starter, his salary will be affordable enough to entice a trade

Looks like it's possible that it's what Rosenthal think the Cubs should do.

Rosenthal's the best when it comes to breaking stories, but he's still a national media presence, so he's still an idiot when it comes to knowing what makes a good player.

I don't know that he's necessarily saying what should happen, but it does seem like closer to pure speculation (or an educated guess of some type) than actually have inside information.

The key phrase to me is "Look for". Most of the time that seems to be followed with speculation.

I could be wrong, but it's possible I'm right, at least.

If true, this is a seriously stupid move. Trachsel was the worst starting pitcher in baseball last year. It was dumb to trade for him, and it would be just about the worst possible move to exercise that option and retain him for next season.

I think what's helping me keep the faith is his speculation after he mentions them picking up the option, saying that the Cubs may not want him back as 5th starter, meaning he in the very least doesn't know the whole story. Grasping at straws probably.

And luckily this guy is often wrong. I do hope they pick up Wards though.

Having watched and read Rosenthal a ton this year, I can say that most of his sentences start with "look for" and then they become true.

Oh well, so much for that idea. I haven't read a lot of Rosenthal's articles and hadn't noticed that he begins what he says in interviews with "Look for" so I didn't realize he used it a lot.

I've seen in other articles it used to begin a speculatory story though.

april fools?

My thoughts exactly. The Cubs can probably sign Gallagher, Hart, Marshall, and Prior for $4.75M and get infinitely better production. Hopefully this is one of Ken's rare misses.

You had a very valid point. A+ for critical reading. Its just something I've noticed about the way Rosenthal talks. He always says "look for".

Yeah, I think I remember hearing him say it, but for some reason it's never really hit me til I read that article.

Thanks for the high grade though. I didn't get many of those in school. :D

Even Hendry can't be this stupid. I don't care what Ken Rosenthal speculates, there's no way the Cubs bring Trachsel back. No way.
