It all depends if the team wants to go with 4 starters or not. If there's only 3, they won't put Marquis on as a reliever. If 4, he'll be the 4th guy. Remember also that the roster can change from round to round so if the Cubs want to use 4 starters in one round and then 3 the next, they always could bring Marquis for one series and leave him off of another.

I was going to say the same thing. If Lou chooses to us a four man rotation, who do you start for Game 4 if it's not Marquis? Steve Traschel? Basically what the decision is going to come down to for Lou is who he thinks will be more effective in Game 4: Z on 3 days rest or Marquis/Traschel/?.

I can't believe that Trachsel will be on the playoff roster, no matter how bad Marquis has been. If he is, somebody needs to examine Lou for senility.

Why does everyone forget about Sean Marshall? I would definitely choose him over Marquis or Trachsel.

Exactly!!!!! Free Marshall

So would I, but I highly doubt he's being seriously considered. The Cubs preferred to start the corpse of Steve Trachsel over Marshall down the stretch. I doubt they're suddenly going to give him a playoff start.

Marquis has been awful in Sept and I'd not be confidant in his abilities in game 4, but I don't think it's fair to use a relief appearance in game 162 against his overall resume.

At this point, with whatever problem Sean Marshall has making him not an option for the 4th starter, Jason Marquis is the obvious choice for the game 4 starter if Z is not brought back on short rest. I'd prefer not to have Z on short rest unless the Cubs are forced to (down 2-1).

Exactly, just keep him a short leash.

The only question is whether Z on short rest will be better than Marquis or Marshall on normal rest. I think it's pretty clear he would be. You don't want to throw away a potential chance to close out at home.

Lilly will be on full rest for Game 5 if he starts Game 2 due to the off-days if needed. If you end up not needing him then, he can start Game 1 of the NLCS and Z can start Game 2 on normal rest.

The key will be not letting Z throw too many pitches in Game 1 (Dusty Baker just fainted BTW) if it's not necessary. Get him out of there with under 100 pitches if it's possible that way if we need him to go in Game 4, he won't be gassed.

If they think Z can go on three days rest in Game 4, there's no reason for Marquis to be on the roster for this series. Lilly would still have four days rest for Game 5

If we're up 2-1 by then, put in Marquis, but on a short leash. If not, go with Z. As long as when the 9th inning roles around, and we're up, we dont see you know who, no matter how big the lead.

Piniella has to make the decision about whether he feels comfortable with going to Z on 3 days rest or not and then plan accordingly no matter how the first three games come out. To be up 2-1 then give away a chance to put away another team on your home field so you can save a guy for the next series is a big mistake. The only reason to not put Z out there is either because he does not think he will be as effective on the short rest or because he thinks he has a better chance to win on the road.

As for Dempster, there is no way Piniella is not going to him in save situations. He has used him there all year with a good % of success and he is not going to suddenly switch around the bullpen roles now that the team is in the playoffs.

No offense or anything, but where's the logic here? Last time Zambrano pitched on 3 days rest he got his ass handed to him. He's been iffy all year, and now I'm supposed to believe because he pitched well against the AAA Reds and the Pirates that's he back to being awesome?

No way. No one on here can convince me Z on 3 days rest is better than Marshall. No one has made a decent argument against Marshall at all. Jason Marquis has an ERA of like 5.50 after May. That's worthless. A 5.50 ERA after May? And what's the argument against Marshall? "He had a bad month and then he didn't pitch well." So what? Marquis has nothing but bad months. How many bad months did Zambrano have? Why is it Marshall's not good enough, but everyone believes Kevin Hart is some kind of awesome reliever based on 11 innings?

It doesn't make sense.

I agree. I'm still pissed off that Marshall lost his job.

I guess I'll grudgingly accept Dempster in his proper role, only because he historically has been decent closing and are we really going to switch up closers now? That doesn't seem wise.

But Marquis. Wow. If Jason pitches it's likely to be an exercise in breath holding, then screaming, then crying, then screaming again, weeping. Really ugly stuff. Don't want to see that.

Seeing that marshall has not pitched in a couple of weeks and has only pitched a total of 4 innings since Aug. 31, I personally think that here is something not quite right going on with him. I just can't think of any other reason for not pitching him the past couple of days to get a better idea of where he will stand on the playoff roster. The cubs have a neat way of keeping pitcher injuries quiet (see Guzman).

sorry, didn't see the game and for some reason it's not on his game log at baseball reference

edit: found it, I have no idea why the cubs have lost all faith in him then.

So, in short, the key is to sweep the damn series.

this is the strategy I would use.

So it's decided. The Cubs will sweep in the west and there we will have the peace.
