Wow...

Phillies and Mets tied for 1st

and we thought the Cubs were playing bad, the Mets just got shut out by St. Louis

If the Mets blow it, it will be the 2nd biggest collape in baseball history. 500-1 odds. They had a 99.8% chance of making the playoffs on Sept 12th.

So you're saying we won't even be the biggest choke this year...we can't get anything right. :D

hard to believe there's a team that's gagging worse than the Cubs are right now. Wow Mets

We're 10-5 in our last 15, 15-11 overall in September.

Yes it was a bad series, but we're hardly gagging.

True. If you look back far enough into this season the fact that we are even in this is attributable to a sizeable choke job on the part the Brewers.

That said, I'm still freaking out a bit.

Even if the Cubs did choke this thing away, it would in no way compare to the magnitude and depth of the Mets choke.

Apparently there has never been a team that lost as big a lead in September as they have, ever. Blowing a 3-game lead in the final week does not compare to that.

What's the biggest lead the Mets had this season? How about when they started September?

Pretty ridiculous collapse by the Mets.

Pretty ridiculous collapse by the Mets.

They led by 7 on Sept. 12th.

It's the biggest collapse in history for that short a period of time, apparently.

It's huge. I think the Cubs' '69 collapse wasn't close -- something around 5 1/2 games as of Sept. 1st or something.

But the Mets would be the wildcard (as of today) if they lost the division, right?

Nope. They'd be one game behind the Padres.

Man, I thought we had it bad in Cubdom after that last series...

If the Mets end up not making the playoffs - let alone not winning the division - after leading the NL East for pretty much the whole season, or so (up to this point)..... that's suicide alert stuff right there.

Phillies play at home against the Nationals. Mets finish at home against the Marlins that just spanked us. Should be an interesting weekend. I can't stand the Mets, but I almost hope they end up winning because I don't fear them nearly as much as I fear the Phillies.

There are very few teams that I would take glee in seeing this happen to.

Fortunately, the Mets are one of them.

Suck it, fools.

I disagree. The one team in the NL I dont want to face is da phitin phillies

They scare me

Nate Silver has an article on the biggest collapses in regards to teams who had the highest odds to reach the postseason and yet blew it.

(The 1969 Cubs rank fifth on his list; top spot belonging to the 1995 Angels.)

Here's what he says about the teams in the National League.

Naturally, most of the action is now in the National League. There are five NL teams that have at some point during this regular season have had at least an 80 percent chance of reaching the playoffs, and there are only four playoff spots to be had, so at least one and possibly as many as three teams are going to wind up with a place on this list of all-time infamy:

The Padres (83.37 percent to make the playoffs after games of September 20th) would rank 50th all-time if they miss;

The Brewers (86.65 percent on July 2nd) would rank 40th if they miss;

The Cubs (95.58 percent on September 23rd) would rank 12th if they miss;

The Diamondbacks (96.64 percent on September 24th) would rank seventh if they miss;

The Mets (99.80 percent on September 12th) would rank second all-time if they miss, making good on a 500-to-1 shot against.

It’s easier to make this list in the Wild Card era, simply because there are more playoff spots available, and the number of teams that reach a certain threshold of probability and miss the playoffs is directly proportionate to the number that make it. However, the notion that this year’s playoff races have turned into something very special is absolutely correct.

I'm a bit surprised at the reactions of many Mets fans. I haven't heard the talk radio, so I'm sure they are freaking out there, but the guys I know are kind of just taking this in stride, accepting their fate without freaking out. It's like a dumbfounded disbelief coupled with a sense that it's all so familiar.

Is there any talk of Randolph losing his job?

Oh yeah. Complaint number 1 is he doesn't inspire enough FIRE AND INTESITY!
