I know it's "BSPN", so discredit this all you want, but I had PTI blaring at full volume on my TV when Kornheiser and Wilbon were talking to Richard Justice of the Houston Chronicle. When asked about his picks to the WS, he said the Yanks and the COBS.

I'm an overly optimistic Cubs fan, but man, I feel that his picking the Cubs was prettttty bold.[/b]

Because Richard Justice, a writer based in Houston, said he expected the Cubs to make the world series, it's ESPN's love for the Cubs?

That's absurd logic and you know it.

Why do you put a negative spin on everything? It is something I heard and decided to share here because I thought it was funny. I obviously didn't stand on the sears tower and say "ESPN loves the Cubs" , bro-sifer. But thanks for overanalyzing a couple of basic thoughts.

I really hate ESPN for everything except PTI. I have always liked that show. I dont really have a take on Richard Justice though.

What I dont understand is all these experts saying the Yankees are hot at the right time and picking them for the WS. How about Cleveland. They seem to be every bit as hot as the Yankees in the last month. Playing a tougher schedule.

The change the title of the thread from ESPN to Richard Justice.

Thanks for the legal advice.

Why don't you understand it? The Yankess play in NY and the Indians play in the Cleve. Face it, these "experts" need quotes around them.

my point was that Cleveland's track record in the post season is nearly as futile as the Cubs

I'd say the Indians getting to the world series twice in a decade alone makes them a very different franchise from the Cubs.

If they make the playoffs....they have a shot. So to pick them is no big deal at all. You look smart if they win.....and if you are wrong no will care anyway.

That's why I love baseball. The long arduous schedule produces only 8 playoff teams. Anyone can make it. I like the Cubs chances in the NL playoffs. If we do make it to the World Series, it will be much tougher against any of the 4 AL teams.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand when people refer to the team as the "COBS"? Is that supposed to have some type of negative connotation?

Actually I don't even know what it means. I just saw it here, and Monkey See Monkey Do. It indeed sounds funny, if that validates the use of it here. Unless I'm a n00b to it too, It's not negative as far as I know.

The thread in which "Cobs" originated several years ago is stickied in the Rants forum.

It has to do with the fact that the Indians, at 58 years, now have the second longest World Series drought in the majors behind the Cubs. Obviously the Indians are nowhere near as bad as the Cubs are in terms of futility, but they're up there.

Refers to how Harry Caray often pronounced 'Cubs'.

A Yankee vs Cubs World Series would be a major plus for the ratings. This would get the casual viewer to watch. I'm not saying this is going to happen but if it did, they would finally have some decent ratings.

none of the teams in the NL are that great - see Arizona's run differential, SD's questionable offense, the Mutts' late-season collapse, the Phillies' rotation/bullpen. Not that the Cobs don't have holes too, but it's not unreasonable to pick them to win the NL - except for history being completely against that sort of thing happening.
