What does everyone think of Josh Kroeger these days?

I thought he was one of the more intriguing prospect the Cubs had in the upper minors for much of the year.

Will he get a shot at being an everyday RF in the bigleagues someplace next year?

Will the Cubbies find a role for him, or give him a chance to win their RF job?

Does he have any trade value?

Or is he simply headed for minor league free agency again?

Haven't Patterson's problems at second been throwing? If so, I think those could be rectified.

I only saw EPATT one game down in Iowa, but he had a terrible defensive game and didn't seem to have much range at all. He was also having difficulty fielding the moderately hard hit grounders. I would be interested to hear from people that have seen him more often. Like I said, I only got to see him once, and that may have been one of his off nights, but his poor defense stuck out like a sore thumb.

No, it's primarily been fielding.

He's gotten negatives on almost every aspect. Some throwing problems. The previous post about poor range. His problems turning the DP have been mentioned more than once. Didn't BA's prospect book refer to something positive last book, though? Was it soft hands, maybe?

On Kroeger, I think he might have a shot at a 40-man roster spot. But not certain they'll spend one on him. I don't think there's any chance he'll be starting regularly for a major-league team next season, barring several injuries. Well, at least not in the spring. I think he'd need to put together a real good stretch at AAA to get a shot. Maybe pull a Soto or something like that. Not sure a .275-type average will get it done, though. But if he could do in AAA comparable to what he did in AA, who knows. But I think he'll need to prove it/earn it again.

Is it possible that Patterson is a future CF?

He could probably be as good as Pierre defensively with a little more experience. I could see a team regarding him as a valuable as leadoff man.

If Patterson is in the outfield, his greatest value to the Cubs is as a tradeable comodity.

Yes.

Obviously yes, if the Cubs don't roster him.

But I think the Cubs have the right to place him on the 40-man roster first, in which case he wouldn't be eligible for minor-league free agency. Not so?

I don't know whether they like him well enough to burn a 40-man roster spot on him. But I'd think it's at least possible.

Yeah, you're right, craig. He has to be added on to the 40-man by October 15th.

shouldn't be a problem freeing a spot by 10/15 if they make the playoffs

- Cotts

- Novoa

- Mateo

- Ohman

add Floyd, Trachsel, and Monroe if they don't

Novoa's on the 60-day DL, so he's not currently on the 40-man. The others you mentioned are potentials for freeing up spots.

I wouldn't be in a huge rush to deroster Mateo if they didn't have to.

You can add Trachsel anyways, no way he makes the playoff roster. He's done (thankfully).
