To close the season be enough to win the NL Central finishing at 85-77? Or do we need to manage a couple sweeps and finish 87-75? That's taking the game vs pitt the game vs st louis monday. Taking 2 of 3 from houston. 2 of 4 from St Louis. 2 of 3 from cincy 2 of 3 from pittsburgh and 3 of the final 6. If i did the math correctly.

13-8 would most likely win it. If that included 3 of 5 vs. the Cards, then they would have to go 14-4 in their other games to keep pace (if they lose tonight), which isn't gonna happen. The Brewers would have to maintain that pace while playing a tougher schedule. If the west stays close, the Padres will have as much to play for as the Brewers that final series. That could make the difference.

Both teams probably tread around .500 the next 10-12 games. But the schedule for the last 10/11 games is all that matters to Cubs fans.

The Brewers last 11 games go against Atlanta, St. Louis, and San Diego. Cubs fans have to hope they go 4-7 or worse on that stretch.

Meanwhile the Cubs close the season against Pitt, Florida, and Cin. And the Cubs need to go at least 6-4 to have a shot.

83 wins takes this division.

At this point, I would gladly trade schedules with the Brewers. I can't imagine the Cubs beating any of those three teams more than once in a series.

I'll be thoroughly shocked if the Cubs are more than about 1 game over .500 for the remaining stretch.

I too. I fear a repeat of the close of 2004, the Cubs will have chance after chance to seize the NL Central (WC in 2004) but, we fail to do so. I believe we are going to witness several 1 run extra inning loses, games in which the the Cubs grossly out hit and, save for a pitch or two, out pitch the opposition.

We'll see things like the Cubs leaving 20+ plus men on base, Lee and Ramirez GIDP's with the bases loaded, failing to score a run with a runner on third and no outs, etc. The real kicker is that these failings won't occur because the opposition made the perfect pitch, no, they'll occur because Lee and Ramirez just missed hanging sliders or high BP fastballs. The writing is on the wall.

Unfortunately Atlanta and St. Louis will probably be out of contention by the time they meet up with Milwaukee. So they may not be on top of their game. I think the hardest stretch will be the final four against SD. They will most likely will still be fighting for the division and/or WC.

After last night's loss, I took all my Cubs stuff down here at work. I am tired of hearing people laugh about the Cubs. I will quietly cheer if they get into the playoffs....though, I have to admit, I'm pretty much preparing for the inevitable melt down.

So you're a closet Cubs fan?

They haven't won a World Series in almost 100 years. Why is one more too much of an embarassment for you?

Everybody. Once they see the Cubs hat they get a real good laugh. As for the diehards, there is one Yankee fan, and two Red Sox fans. Really not much I can retort back.

There's something highly embarrassing hitting triple digits.....also that Eamus Catuli sign would need one more digit.

I'm not saying that it's not embarrassing but I'm not ashamed to be a fan. Yeah, the lows suck pretty bad but the highs are definitely worth it.

Never been a closet fan. I'm just sick of having to explain to everyone why I'm a Cub fan. And to make things worse, I have to come in on Monday after the Bears opening loss after bragging they would 12 or maybe 13 games this year. Sunday was a double whammy -- Cubs get knocked out of first and the Bear's get their butts kicked.

Maybe I should be a little more humble when it comes to my Chicago teams, especially when it comes to the Cubs.

I guess that's the price you pay for bragging. I leave that stuff for bandwagon Yankees fans.

Anytime they make the playoffs. 84, 89, 98, 03 all were fun experiences. 2003 may have ended painfully but that was one fun ride.

I guess one could debate whether it was worth it or not. I'd prefer never to go through a Bartman-like experience again.

It was definitely worth it. The ending was painful, but we got to experience the Cubs' first division title since 1989 and the first postseason win since 1908. Give me a playoff series loss over not making the playoffs any day.

10-7 starting tonight could get us in; albeit barely (unless the Brewers suddenly remember where they're supposed to be in the next few days).

11-6 would probably get us in.

12-5 (or better) = Hello playoffs!

I'd actually be slightly surprised if the Brewers went better than 8-9 the rest of the way.

2 of 3 against cincy (home)

1 of 3 against houston (road)

1 of 4 against atlanta (road)

2 of 3 against st. louis (home)

2 of 4 against san diego (home)

I think the Brewers will probably leave this weekend a game up on the Cubs (unless the Cubs continue to just dominate the Cardinals) but after that the Cubs should have opportunities to catch them and pass them.
