Myers was upset after a reporter asked him about 2 homeruns he gave up yesterday.

When Myers was asked about the two home runs he said, he said they were really "just pop ups," and he dealt with the follow-up question harshly. "You're not even a beat reporter, you're a fill-in, you don't know anything about baseball," said Myers, who then called the reporter "[expletive]." The Inquirer reporter asked if Myers could spell [expletive], and Myers stood up and had to be restrained by Pat Burrell. All things considered, Burrell probably overreacted. The reporter wasn't his wife, so it's doubtful things would have gotten physical.

This sums up Myers perfectly. When he was in the minors I was doing some work for BA and had to arrange some photos to be taken for their next issue. He refusede because BA didn't rank him high enough and pretty much blamed me for it. I just laughed and walked away from him.

Man. What a headcase. It's not really fair that a creep like him gets to play baseball for a living.

Not that I'm bitter or anything.

I'm not defending Myers at all, but if you ask a guy in a playoff race that just gave up 2 HRs to blow a save if he can spell something (even if its a stupid insult), you shouldn't be surprised if he tries to punch you in the face. The insult was stupid and Myers is clearly a moron (more so for his past infractions), but it sounds like the writer was antagonizing him.

In this one case then I say good for the writer.

I agree whole-heartedly. That sort of attack-dog stuff is unprofessional. The reporter should be ashamed of himself. He needs to remember to be a professional and not take bait from immature athletes who are paid to be ultra-competitive beyond reason. The reporter is as much blame as Myers himself.

That comment from the reporter was dumb, but Myers had already insulted him about his job and called him a name at that point. I don't think the reporter was baiting him-he just responded (which he shouldn't have done) when Myers baited him, and then things got out of hand.

OK, it's not like the reporter started this. He was asking questions about the game and Meyers responded by attacking the reporter's living and then called him [expletive].

Actually, I thought the reporter was pretty shrewd -- and funny to boot.

The reporter should have said "Oooh burn I was called a [expletive] by a wife beater. What a hypocrite."

Of course Myers would have gone on and killed the reporter via a bat.

Now that would have been unprofessional and over the line, though it would have been interesting.

no he did no start it, but he did finish it

I feel badly for his wife and kids (if they have any) - he's obviously a punk who can't control his temper. Even though his wife didn't file charges against him after the assault (that was witnessed by a number of people in Boston), it's a real shame the Phillies didn't release the guy.

The reporter shares in the blame here, but at least he didn't try to attack Myers when he called him "[expletive]." I imagine Myers would have beaten the guy bloody if someone hadn't restrained him - would have been bad for the reporter, but at least Myers would have been done!

How? Myers started it and then tried to finish it by attmepting to physically attack the guy. All the reporter did was take one shot after having a string of verbal attacks hurled at him by the goon that he DARED to ask questions to in regards to the game. Yeah, what an out of control "attack dog" of a journalist.

Couldn't the state have filed charges against Myers even the the Wife didn't want simply because of the number of people that witnessed it.

I don't blame Myers at all for this. It was probably 15 minutes after he blew a save and some reporter he doesn't even know comes in and starts asking him about blowing the game. These guys aren't robots, he was pissed off and insulted someone that was probably baiting him. I'm suprised it doesn't happen more often.

it's called being a PROFESSIONAL athlete. answering questions from reporters is part of the deal

was the game in Philly?

I'd call the Russell Branyon game winner against Zambrano on his near no hitter a "pop up"

Neither are the journalists. To say Myers isn't at fault is ridiculous.

What's even more ridiculous is comparing players and journalists.

Because one is any less human than the other?
