if only we had a catcher leading the PCL in batting average, slugging and OPS, with a .462 BA and a 1.304 OPS in August... would could call that guy up and let him play

Would everyone be content if he was the backup catcher? Or does he have to start?

Of course Soriano should lead off instead of Theriot /rolleyes

people have proven that lineup order has little affect on outcomes of games

Not to mention that why people have been saying this, Theriot has been terrible lately before today:

Here's his August line: .288/.306/.339

And here is his last 7 days:

.250/.241/.286

Both of those are coming into play today.

stop ruining Cynosure's perceptions of reality!

So show me your 'people' that have proven it doesn't matter who your leadoff hitter is.

Bill James has pretty much proven that lineup order doesn't matter.

Line-up order doesn't matter? Yea right! That's false, I can see the logic in the lead-off batter not mattering as much. But what you said is 100% completely false. You have to protect your best hitters, and that is a fact.

As long as you bunch up the good hitters, you're fine. Nothing else matters.

NOPE that's not what he said... he said it's been proven LINE UP ORDER DOESN'T MATTER that says nothing about bunching up the good hitters.

I personally believe lineup order does matter. Imagine having the pitcher and neifi in front of your best hitter instead of having them in the 8 and 9 spot.

Why not let him backup at the least?

back up is fine as long as Kendall is still hitting.

Oh, I definitely want him to come up and be the backup catcher. I'm just wondering for the people calling for Soto if they think he has to be the starter to be productive (as has been said for other young position players). I would love for him to replace Koyie Hill, but I think Kendall should get most of the PT at catcher right now.

No need for the personal attacks from a few pages back, people.

James isn't proposing that you put names in a bag and draw them randomly. What he's refuting is the old school notion that you need a speedy leadoff hitter, all or nothing #4 hitter, etc.

Thats fine, but we are giving away 4 outs a game with Hill up here. We don't have a good enough team to get away with that.

So your saying you would want Ty Cobb hitting 4th? Lol.

If this organization has Pie as a defensive replacement / pinch runner, it's ridiculous that they will stick with Hill as the backup catcher with Soto murdering the ball and probably better defensively.

Ty Cobb would be an awesome middle of the order hitter

Backup catcher is better than not having him at all on this team. Hill brings nothing to the table. Only a fool like Muskat looks at win/loss records to determine if the catcher is good or not

So you wouldn't complain if the batting order was:

Murton RF

Pitcher P

Jones CF

Kendall C

Ramirez 3B

DeRosa 2B

Soriano LF

Lee 1B

Theriot SS

Please honestly answer me that.

That would be bad simply because in the long run, your inferior hitters are going to get more plate appearances than your good hitters

But the argument is "LINE UP ORDER DOESN'T MATTER IT'S BEEN PROVEN" because the hitters will produce somewhere else in the line up. I know it's bad but some people are to stubborn to admit it.

I think apples and oranges are being argued here.

I think the point you're trying to make is that, regardless of where a player bats, he's going to be the same player. In other words, "protection" -- the idea that hitters will pound a #2 hitter fastballs in close counts to avoid seeing him get on in front of the big boppers -- is really a myth.

The way you're coming off, though, is that regardless of what lineup you churn out there, the team is going to be equally proficient in every case.

The former is debatable -- I don't think it's true. The latter, in my opinion, is just flat-out nonsense. Because players lower in the order don't get as many at-bats as players high in the order, you will suffer if your best hitters are down in the order.

Isn't that the Cubs m.o. under Hendry? No real grasp of perspective. Eat a bag Griffey.

yeah definitely wouldn't want a cleanup hitter who finished top 5 in SLG% 15 times
