Iowa is only 4.5 games out of the Mini-Brewers (The Rickie Weeks call-up probably hurt)

Tenn is 4 games out in the Southern League North

Peoria only 2.5 games out in the MID Western

Boise in a 4-way race to lead the NOR East and are .5 games out

Peoria only 2.5 games out in the MID Western

If the season ended today, Peoria would make the playoffs thanks to the wild card spot. They are 2.5 games ahead of Kane County and Burlington.

There is no Wild Card in the Southern League unless the same team wins both halves of the season. Currently that is the case in the Southern League North Division (Tennessee's division), but in that event I don't recall whether the second position goes to the team with the better overall record for the entire season or for the second half. If it's based on the second half Chattanooga leads the Smokies by 1 game; if it's based on the entire season the Smokies lead Chattanooga by 7 games.

I think Mitch Atkins' night is over. Another bad outing for Mitch - 5 IP, 4 ER, 5 H, 2 K/3 BB, HBP, 2 HR.

That's 9 IP, 11 ER (11.0 ERA), 14 H, 5 K/5 BB, 3 HR at AA. And counting his last start at Daytona, that's: 12 IP, 17 ER (12.75 ERA), 20 H, 7 K/8 BB, 4 HR.

Daytona faced one of the better pitching prospects in baseball in Mets' RHP Deolis Guerra but Guerra only lasted 3 strong innings before being replaced.

Ho hum, another game for Ceda...still no hits since he went to the pen/returned from the DL. He struck out the side in his inning today.

Since coming off the DL: 14 IP, 2 ER, 0 H, 24 K/7 BB.

Iowa falls to Omaha, 2-0. Bailey went 7 giving up 8 hits, 2 runs, 2 K's/0 BB's. Ohman pitched 2/3's of an inning allowing a hit, a walk, and struck out one. Soto had another ho-hum 2/4 day. Simokaitis was 2/3. Other than that, not much to report on the offense.

Tennessee lost 9-5. Atkins struggled as he gave up 5 hits, 4 runs, 3 K's/3 BB's, and allowed two homers in just 5 innings. Nannini allowed a run in an inning and Avery gave up 4 in two innings. Jemel Spearman was 2/4 with a walk, an RBI, and a stolen base. Cortes was 2/4 with a walk. Colvin went 0/5 with a strikeout.

Daytona was blown out, 9-1. Reinhard couldn't record an out in the 5th as he gave up 7 hits, 7 runs, 6 ER, 4 K's/2 BB's, and allowed a homer. Matulia was 2/4 with two doubles and Clevenger was 2/3 with a walk. Dope was 0/4 with a K and Harvey was 0/4 with 3 K's.

Peoria won 5-1. Carrillo went 5 and 1/3 allowing 4 hits, 1 run, 3 K's/2 BB's, and allowed a homer. Ruhlman, Ceda, and Maestri pitched 3 and 2/3 shutout innings of relief. Ceda struck out the side in the 8th. Barney went 2/4 with a run scored. Johnson was 1/2 with two walks. Lalli was 1/3 with a double and a walk. Adduci had two RBI's.

Chris Huseby looked impressive with 6 shutout innings today: 6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 4 K/2 BB, 11 GO-2 FO. Tony Thomas, Dylan Johnston and Josh Donaldson have had big games with the bat.

You think the Cubs would take a hint when the picture on the homepage is of Soto with the caption: "Why isn't he up yet?"

I thought that was a joke, and then I checked. I wish it was a joke

Muskat -

The Cubs are very much aware of Soto's numbers (he was hitting .353 with 20 homers and 84 RBIs through Saturday). However, Jason Kendall is an experienced catcher and is valuable to the Cubs because of his ability to work with young pitchers like Rich Hill and Sean Marshall. Kendall also is hitting better, and was batting .394 (13-for-33) with five RBIs in his last nine games. You may not like Hill, but he's a good match with Carlos Zambrano, and the Cubs have a 16-8 record when he's behind the plate. Those are important numbers, too. If they wanted a strictly offensive catcher, they would've kept Michael Barrett. Yes, Soto is the catcher of the future, and he'll be up in September.

IowaCubs.com"]O-Royals Blank Cubs 2-0 Tuesday

Iowa Shutout for just the fourth time

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

Omaha ended Iowa's five game winning streak with a 2-0 shutout Tuesday night at Rosenblatt Stadium.

Billy Buckner combined with two relievers to scatter five singles as the Cubs suffered only their fourth shutout of the season. Buckner went seven innings to win his ninth against seven losses. Kenny Ray got one out in the eighth inning and Neal Musser pitched the final inning and 2/3rds to collect his seventh save. Cubs manager Buddy Bailey had this to say about the Cubs loss, "We just didn't put in enough good at-bats...some guys had opportunities with pitches to hit, but we just didn't swing the bats."

The Cubs' Geovany Soto went two for four to improve his league best batting average to .359. Soto extended a hitting streak to fifteen games while Matt Craig went one for four to up a hitting streak to ten games.

The losing pitcher for Iowa was Cory Bailey, now 4-3 on the season. With a Nashville loss, Iowa remains 4 1/2 games behind the Sounds in the American North.

Will Ohman saw his first action with Iowa since coming down from Chicago, pitching 2/3rds of an inning, allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout and no runs. Bailey said it was a good outing for Ohman, noting that Ohman "didn't appear to have any problem with his shoulder."

Eric Patterson, who was optioned from Chicago on Tuesday, will rejoin Iowa from Chicago Wednesday and Sean Gallagher, also optioned, is scheduled to start Thursday for Iowa against Omaha.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Lookouts Slug Smokies 9-5 Tuesday

Chattanooga TN- The Lookouts used the long ball to tame Tennessee at AT&T field Tuesday Night. Three different Lookouts belted homeruns and Chattanooga wins the game 9-5.

Tennessee scored the games first run on a Chattanooga fielding error in the second inning.

Chattanooga’s Danny Dorn tied the game in the third inning with a homerun to left. Then with two retired in the fourth and a man on Smokies starter Mitch Atkins hit Adam Rosalas with an 0-2 pitch. The next better Drew Anderson belted a three-run homerun to rightfield giving Chattanooga a 4-1 lead.

Tennessee took advantage of more Lookouts miscues in the fourth inning. Tyler Colvin forced in a run with a bases loaded wild pitch third strike. Then Casey McGehee grounded a bad hopper to the shortstop Luis Bolivar which sent a second runner in.

Alberto Garcia delivered in the sixth to help Tennessee take a 5-4 lead. His pitch hit triple scored one to even the score then Jemel Spearman singled to score Garcia.

Chattanooga then scored the games final five runs to run away with the contest. Marland Williams pitch hot single tied the game in the sixth. Then Dorn doubled in Anderson for the go-head run in the seventh. The Lookouts scored again three more times in the eighth capped off by a two-run homerun off the bat of Adam Rosales.

Cubs Continue To Struggle in 2007

By: Matt Martinez

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] The Cubs lost the final two games against the Clearwater Threshers and enjoyed a day off on Monday. But, the revitalized Cubs couldn't start off the short homestand with a win as the St. Lucie Mets demoralized the Cubs, 9-1.

Greg Reinhard started out smooth for the Cubs as he went three scoreless innings, walked one and struck out three while allowing only one hit. But it all came unravelled for Reinhard in the fourth as the Mets put together a big inning.

St. Lucie scored four runs in the fourth inning on four base hits and were helped by a Daytona error. The Mets didn't stop there as they plated three more runs in the fifth on a three run homer off the bat of Nick Evans to make the score, 7-0 St. Lucie.

Reinhard was lifted for Chucky Platt and he promptly sat down six out of the first seven he saw.

Daytona finally showed some offense in the bottom of the sixth as Matt Matulia unloaded his second triple of the game to score Steve Clevenger.

St. Lucie would add runs in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively to put the game at a very lopsided 9-1 advantage in favor of the Mets.

BoiseHawks.com"]Hawks Shut Out Bears, 11-0

The Boise Hawks Shutout the Yakima Bears Tuesday night, 11-0. Starter Chris Huseby went six innings for the win in his finest performance of the season. Oscar Bernard, Yuri Higgins and Steve Vento each threw an inning in the first shutout for the Hawks staff this season. Huseby gave up two runs in the first inning and that was it for the night. He walked two and struck out four in earning his second win of the season.

Dylan Johnston and Josh Donaldson each had three hits for the Hawks to pace the 12-hit attack. Tony Thomas had two hits, extending his hitting streak to 14 games. He also walked and was hit by a pitch, stole two bases and scored four times. Ty Wright hit his team-leading 8th home run of the season.

Jonathan Wyatt reached base via error twice, and had a sacrifice fly. He drove in three runs and scored twice. He was, however, hitless, snapping his league-high hitting streak at 21 games.

Because we all know that the 16-8 record the Cubs have is directly related to Hill being behind the plate. What a moronic thing to say. Her baseball acumen is right up there with the average 12-year old.

Des Moines Register"]Will Ohman saw his first action with Iowa since coming down from Chicago, pitching two-thirds of an inning and allowing a hit and a walk with one strikeout and no runs.

"He didn't appear to have any problem with his shoulder," said Bailey of the pitcher, who had complained of problems in that regard after being demoted.

Knoxville News Sentinel"]Roster Move: Second baseman Gary Cates (broken finger) was activated from the disabled list.

The Chicago Cubs assigned center fielder/second baseman Matt Camp to Class A Daytona to make room for Cates. Camp batted .063 in eight games with the Smokies.
