Wow, Z cannot miss a bat tonight. No command.

Or maybe the Reds are just good? LOL!

Nope. The Reds are a mediocre run-scoring team before you even take their home park into account.

Who says Hill and Pie are going to be All-Stars? I certainly in hell don't think either of them will be.

When was the last time you've seen the Cubs have a position player that they didn't trade for go to the All-Star Game? Ryne Sandberg? Mark Grace?

Who says Adam Dunn would get us to the World Series? Exactly. I did the same thing you did earlier in the thread. By the way if you actually read what I said you would have seen the word "possibly".

The point is they're both cheap, young players with good track records who we will have under our control for the next 4+ years. At worst you're probably talking about league average options in positions of need at a very low cost.

When Dunn doesn't get us to the playoffs in his 2 month stay and we're left signing Darin Erstad and Kyle Lohse to replace those guys next year, it will cost more money and be a downgrade in talent. At which time you and others will complain about how bad this team sucks and wish we still had Felix and Rich.

This is the end

It was the end when Hendry did nothing at the deadline.

Don't think he had the resources to

Dang out Pie and see what you get.

I know I'm going to get killed for this, but this is his last year probably here. Go for the throat while you have a decent time. Do what the Braves did.

I think he meant the $$$ to pay the incoming players.

I don't buy that for a minute.

Why?

They would have added payroll. He had to get expiring contracts. Go get Dunn. He opts out after the year and the club isn't stuck paying for him.

Makes too much sense.

Who says Dunn was available to the Cubs at a reasonable price? Do you just wnat to throw whatever they ask at the Reds just to get the deal done? Do you think the Cubs are one Adam Dunn away from winning the World Series? If so, would the investment be a huge waste of our future if Dunn somehow doesn't lead the team to a world series win and walks after the season?

Would you rather go down swinging or not?

We are tied up in bad contracts for the next 2-3 years and we hypothetically have a lock on the checkbook for at least the next season with the impending sale. The only hope we have to improve after this season are our minor leaguers and trading those minor leaguers. Yes we could trade for Dunn (IF HES AVAILABLE TO THE CUBS), but who is going to be the scapegoat when Dunn leaves after the season and you have to start Angel Pagan in the OF next year because you traded Felix Pie, Jake Fox, Sean Marshall, Carlos Marmol, and whatever other crazy stuff the Reds will ask for to trade Dunn to a Central team. Then what will you be saying? Oh well at least the Cubs traded for Dunn and we won 87 games and got swept by the Mets in the NLDS. I doubt it

And we'll just keep enjoying not going to the playoffs.

Exactly, its a Catch-22. But a GM's job isn't to play for a season. It's to direct a teams transactions to set up for now and the future.

Yeah, but who knows what the hell he actually meant by it. People often use that stuff inappropriately. Looking back, I probably should have realized he was joking, though.

Probably ball 4 Matt.

maybe, but i don't like when people bitch about players swinging at close pitches on a two-strike count. Everyone rips on Pie and Lee for standing there and striking out looking when they're down in the count... most hitters not named Ted Williams or Barry Bonds are going protect by swinging at close pitches in those counts.

That's the entire point. In the current situation we have a better chance of being a contender by keeping Pie, Hill and Marmol around for the next 4+ years than just getting Dunn for a two-month rental.

That doesn't mean those guys are untouchable. It just doesn't make sense to sell the future all for a 2-month rental who will downgrade other areas of the team and hurt us significantly in the future.

This is the problem with the Cubs; they're afraid to get rid of any pitcher now because one guy was great for one or two seasons (Dontrelle Willis). Looks like the ol' D-Train got figured out, didn't he? Man, Dontrelle is awesome now, isn't he?

And it certainly looks like one-pitch Rich got figured out pretty quickly too.

remember the stretch where the cubs were always wining, and when even if they were losing it felt like they would make a comeback?

that was fun.

yeah but that didn't really feel right, rooting for a winning team. I'm much more in my comfort zone now.

EXACTLY! And if you want to make the playoffs in any future years you don't give in to the Reds insane demands for Dunn. Why don't you understand that?

I have no idea who your rant about Willis was directed at.

Apparently the only start of Hill's since the All-Star break that you've seen was his last one against a very good lineup in a hitter's park.
