Just mentioned it in an in-game update during the Cubs game on CSN. Apparently Lou has decided that he's going to mix and match the closer position with Dempster, Howry, and Marmol. Basically we're going to have a closer-by-committee situation now.

thank the lord...i think it should be marmol in a landslide...but this is better than nothing

i am tired of Mr. Adventure

closing isn't a game...it isn't, gee...lets see how many runners i can get on base without giving up the game...

Howry is by far the best RP on the pen and yes I have watched Marmol pitch. If I were to pick a closer out of that bunch it would be Howry in a pinch, since May 15th or so he has been one of the best RP's in baseball.

Meh. The closer-by-committee idea is stupid. I'd rather he give each guy a trial period and then give the job to the best candidate.

Marmol's innings are way more important as they are now than they would be coming in in the 9th with nobody on and up by multiple runs. Leave things exactly as they are. Leverage your better relievers and bring Dempster(who isn't bad, but not as good as Marmol or Howry) in for the 9th.

QFT.

The closer is not the most important reliever spot. Too often it would be a waste of Marmol or Howry/

Why bother calling it a closer-by-committee situation? Just say you're going to use the bullpen as how you see fit. I still don't get the fascination over the "closer" role.

Trade Dempster for Borowski. Only kidding, these two were always on the brink of disaster. You need a closer that has stuff that is totally dominating. I think Howry for now while easing Marmol into the role and then Marmol for 2008.

I like the move, you need these arms to be as fresh as poss. for the next two months.

A move like this gets Dempster some extra work and will help limit the work on Howry and Marmol. If any of the 3 haven't been used in 2 days, it gives any of them the chances to get some work and not be tied down score or bullpen role. More importantly, if they have already pitched back to back games they have an extra arm they could use earlier.

This is bad news. Most of the time, the highest leverage situations are earlier in the ballgame... I don't want Dempster pitching then, and I sure don't want us saving Marmol or Howry until the 9th when we may or may not have a lead.

I think this is exactly why Lou is doing this... if the highest leverage situation happens to be in the 9th, he doesn't want to have Dempster be the guy automatically.

I don't remember who said it, but I was watching something about the cubs on tv and it was said that Lou wants to give Dempster a chance to pitch more often, because he needs to pitch often to be effective and a closer isn't able to pitch consistently.

no you don't.

Correction: You want a closer that has stuff that is totally dominating. If you look at the best closers in history, most of them had at least one pitch (95+ mph fastball, splitter, etc.) that was nearly unhittable.

well, you want a guy at every position that hits .300/.450/.600, but that doesn't mean you're gonna get it. plenty of teams have had success w/ less than dominating closers.
