When did we get Nannini back?

Boring pitching day, hopefully there's some strong days from the bats.

I believe Nannini was cut by the Pirates and the Cubs signed him last month. This will be his last start before he goes to the pen (along with Ryan O'Malley) so Atkins and Samardzija can start.

Hart has really done a good job reducing his walk rate this year. Is he a guy who could help the Cubs next year in some capacity?

Actually, looking over his numbers, I wouldn't mind if they brought him up as a reliever to get right-handed hitters out. He has some pretty significant splits in AA and also looking at a prior year's numbers though. He appears to have been pretty consistent in one thing throughout his minor league career though-he strikes out a good amount of right-handers.

Does he project to be much more than that? I'd have to think his future as a starter is shaky, while he could be an effective reliever.

There's a Project 3000 Auction in Daytona this evening - a local artist painted a guitar that the Booster Club has been selling raffle tickets to. Props to Oneri for noticing during a visit a few months back, taking it back with him and getting DLee to sign it. It's a very cool, unique piece.

The Project 3000 Director is also here with Cubs signed memorabilia, so I'm hoping to land something good this evening :)

For those of you near the Cubs minor league affiliates, I guess that they're all doing these auctions - the Chiefs will be August 25th(?) so keep your eyes peeled at a stadium near you!

Daytona lost 5-4 in 10. Tuero gave up an unearned run in the top half of the 10th. Estrada went 6, giving up 7 hits, 3 runs, 4 K's/0 BBs, and allowed a homer. Dopirak hit a solo shot in the bottom of the 9th (with 2 outs) to send the game to extras. Dope also had a double. Harvey had a two-run shot, upping his average to .231. Mautlia was 2/3.

Peoria was two-hit as they lost 1-0. Carrillo went 6, allowing 5 hits, 1 run, 3 K's/3 BB's, and gave up a homer. Blake Lalli had both of Peoria's hits.

Tennessee is down 4-0 in the bottom of the 9th. Good start for Nannini: 6 IP, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 K's/2 BB's. Henderson gave up the other two runs in two innings of relief. Not a good day for the Smokies offense either. Alan Rick is 1/3 with a double, McGehee is 1/4, Cortes is 1/3. Camp and Chirinos are each 1/2.

Iowa is routing Tucson 8-0 in the 6th. Hart has had a good outing up to this point: 5 IP, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 K/3 BB's. Iowa got all 8 of their runs in the 3rd. Soto is 3/3 with a double and two RBI's. EPatt has three singles and an RBI. Pie is 1/4 with a double and two RBI's. Hart has helped his own cause with two singles. Jake Fox is 1/2 with a run scored.

If Hill isn't going to be Z's personal catcher no matter what, there is absolutely no reason for him to be in the big leagues and Soto not to be.

Yeah, there's no use at all for Hill if he's not going to be Z's personal catcher (not like there was any use for him to begin with).

And it's a final in Tennessee. Smokies go down 4-0. That offense just looks real bad without Colvin.

Iowa now leads 12-0. Hart has only allowed 2 hits thru 6. Hart is now 3/4 at the plate with 3 RBI's  Jake Fox is now 2/3, including a double.

Huseby was awful - 1.2 IP, 4 R, 1 ER, 3 H, 1 K/5 BB, HBP. Boise up 7-4 in the third. Jonathan Wyatt has a triple and a HR in 2 AB.

Iowa's game just went final, a 12-4 win. Hart finished with 6 and 2/3's, 3 hits, 1 run, 3 K's/4 BB's. Cotts continued his suckiness as he gave up 3 hits, 3 runs, 2 K's/3 BB's in two innings. EPatt finished 3/5 with an RBI and a run. Soto was 3/4 with a double, a walk, and two RBI's. Jake Fox was 2/4 with a double and a run scored. Felix was 1/5 with a double and two RBI's.

With Craig back, Iowa's lineup is unstoppable. I can only imagine what will happen when Kroeger comes back. LEGENDARY!

HARVEY IS ALIVE!

2 for 4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R

CF Wyatt needs a double to complete the cycle for Boise and its only the 5th inning!

Apparently Kroeger is out for the year. That was mentioned in another thread.

Are you sure???

California Raisin was just speculating when he said this in the AAA injury thread:

Those oblique injuries aren't pretty. I wouldn't be surprised if Kroeger and Petrick are done for what is left of the season.

Yeah, I'm just speculating since there's only about a month left in the season and oblique injuries tend to be tricky.

I remember Raisin's post, but that's not the one I'm thinking of. The one I'm thinking of is newer, from today. Without search I can't find it, though. I'm thinking that post mentioned it as fact rather than speculation, but I'm not positive. We'll know one way or the other soon enough.

And it's a final in Tennessee. Smokies go down 4-0. That offense just looks real bad without Colvin.

You have to consider that the Smokies were going against the best pitcher in the Southern League last night in Chris Mason. He was TB's 2nd rounder in 2005 and just became the first 13-game winner in the SL with the league-leading ERA of 2.41.

I'm really anxious to see Tampa in a few years when Niemann, Price, McGee, Mason & others make it to the bigs.

Dempster missed a month due to his oblique injury. I'll be very surprised if we see either Petrick or Kroeger back this season.

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Smash Sidewinders, 12-4

Hart went 3-for-4 and picked up the win

By Jeff Lantz / Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs scored eight runs in the third inning and cruised to a 12-4 win over the Tucson Sidewinders Saturday night at Principal Park.

Iowa starter Kevin Hart allowed just one run on three hits over 6.2 innings to pick up the win as he improved to 2-1 on the year. Hart helped his own cause with three hits and three runs batted in. Hart, who was a tremendous hitter in his college days at Maryland, is now batting .636 on the year as he has seven hits in 11 at bats for Iowa.

Eric Patterson and Geovany Soto joined Hart with three-hit games of their own. Every Cub but Carlos Rojas recorded a base hit in the blowout and every player in the Iowa lineup scored at least one run.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]SMOKIES SHUT OUT BY BISCUITS 4-0

Sevierville, TN – Very little went right for the Tennessee Smokies on Saturday night, as the visiting Montgomery Biscuits shut down the Smokies offense in a 4-0 loss in front of 4,946 anxious fans. The loss dropped the Smokies to 22-21 for the 2nd half of the season with just under a month left.

Smokies starting pitcher Mike Nannini (0-1) pitched well through six innings, despite being chased early on in the game. In the first inning, the Biscuits were able to score two runs to take the early lead thanks to a Reid Brignac RBI double and a John Jaso RBI single. Nannini worked the next five innings without giving up another run, allowing four hits and striking out four.

Biscuits’ starting pitcher Chris Mason (13-4) was the story of the game. The Smokies offense were blanked by Mason all night long, with their best scoring opportunity coming in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Matt Camp singled for the Smokies, followed by consecutive walks allowed by Mason to Robinson Chirinos and Sam Fuld. With the bases loaded, Nate Spears grounded into an inning ending double play to end the threat, and the score remained 2-0 Montgomery.

Jim Henderson came on in relief for Nannini and ran into trouble in the seventh inning. Henderson attempted to field a ground ball off the bat of Rhyne Hughes and looked to be injured on the play. Henderson remained in the game however, and retired the next batter with a strikeout. Patrick Breen then homered in the next at bat for Montgomery, and the Biscuits now had a 4-0 lead.

The Smokies would not threaten for the rest of the game, as Brian Henderson picked up his first save of the season in three innings of relief work for Mason.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Hammerheads Avoid Sweep, Outlast Cubs, 5-4

Jupiter Triumphs Despite Cubs' Clutch Efforts

By: Dan Watson

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] Despite some late-inning heroics, the Daytona Cubs could not nail down a series sweep of the Jupiter Hammerheads, Saturday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. A fielding error in the top of the tenth inning allowed the eventual winning run to score as the Hammerheads outlasted Daytona, 5-4.

Down to their final strike in the bottom of the ninth, the Cubs extended the game as Brian Dopirak belted a solo home run to right-center to tie the game at four apiece.

The Hammerheads plated the eventual winning run in the top of the tenth without a base hit. A potential inning-ending double play went awry as the relay throw was errant, allowing Augustin Septimo to score and give Jupiter a 5-4 lead which they would not relinquish.

Gaby Sanchez led the charge for Jupiter, going 2-for-5 with a home run and a triple. Dopirak and Ryan Harvey, both Dunedin High School graduates, each homered and scored twice in 2-for-4 performances.

The Hammerheads took the first lead of the game in the top of the second. Gaby Sanchez ripped a triple off the glove of left fielder Yusuf Carter to lead off the frame. Andrew Jenkins followed with an RBI groundout to make it a 1-0 Jupiter lead.

Harvey continued his hot hitting in the bottom of the second. Dopirak drove a double off the wall in right field and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Matulia. Harvey blasted the first pitch he saw over the wall in left to put the Cubs ahead, 2-1.

Sanchez stayed on a roll as he tied the game for the Hammerheads in the top of the fourth. The Jupiter first baseman clubbed a solo home run to tie the game at 2-2.

Jupiter took the lead back in the fifth. Septimo stroked a double to the gap in left-center and scored when Kris Harvey followed with an RBI single.

Daytona tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Ryan Harvey singled and Billy Mottram walked to start the inning. After a groundout, Mark Reed grounded out to score Harvey and tie the ballgame at 3-3.

Cubs' reliever Scott Koerber was touched for an unearned run in the seventh. Angel Molina reached on an error, moved to second and third on consecutive sacrifice bunts, and scored on Septimo's RBI single to give Jupiter a 4-3 edge.

From there, the Jupiter bullpen kept the lead intact into the ninth inning. Southpaw Jacob Marceaux faced the minimum in three scoreless frames.

Down to their final strike in the bottom of the ninth, the Cubs tied the game against Jupiter closer Todd Doolittle. Dopirak smoked a 1-2 pitch over the wall in right-center to tie it up at 4-4. The Hammerheads made it all for naught with the go-ahead run in the tenth.

Despite giving up the lead in the bottom of the ninth, Doolittle (2-4) notched the win. Kurt Koehler pitched a 1-2-3 tenth inning to pick up his first save of the season. Jupiter advanced to 18-20 with the victory.

Yusdel Tuero was the hard-luck loser for Daytona, picking up his first decision of 2007. The Cubs fell to 18-24.

Harvey capped a tremendous series against Jupiter; the former first-round draft pick went 6-for-12 with two home runs, including a grand slam, four runs scored and six RBIs.

The Jupiter victory foiled an attempt for a Daytona series sweep. The Cubs won two of three in the set.

PeoriaChiefs.com"] Chiefs Get 2 Hits in 1-0 Loss

Lansing, MI – One night after allowing only two hits, the Peoria Chiefs collected just two hits in a 1-0 loss to the Lansing Lugnuts on Saturday night. The Chiefs fall to 24-17 on the half and will likely move from the top playoff spot into the wild card position heading into Sunday’s game.

Catcher Blake Lalli picked up both of the Chiefs hits in the game. He led of the second with a single to left but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. He led off the fifth with another single but was left on as three straight batters were retired. The Chiefs did draw four walks in the game but managed just the two Lalli singles.

The pitchers duel entered the seventh inning scoreless. Lansing started Graham Godfrey gave way to the bullpen and lefty Ben Harrison walked one in the seventh but the Chiefs couldn’t get a runner past first base. In the bottom of the seventh, Sean Shoffit led off with a solo homer that just cleared the high wall in right field. The home run, off Chiefs starter Marco Carrillo, provided the first run of the game. Matt Liuzza followed with a double off the wall and Casey Lambert relieved Carrillo. Lambert retired the next three Lugnuts in order to keep the game 1-0.

Peoria ’s best chance to score came in the sixth inning against Godfrey. Derek Schermerhorn led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Nate Samson. Brian Leclerc drew a walk to put two runners on with one out. Darwin Barney bounced into a fielders’ choice and Jim Adduci bounced out to end the inning. The Chiefs put a runner on first with two down in the eight but their last four batters were retired in order to end the game.

Carrillo takes the tough loss allowing five hits in six plus innings of work. The 20 year old struck out three and walked three. Lambert went the final two innings allowing one hit while striking out one.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Marco Carrillo (SP) – Carrillo did everything but swing the bat to keep the Chiefs in the ballgame. He didn’t allow a runner past second until the Shoffit homer in the seventh while striking out three. Carrillo has now gone at least six innings in four straight starts.

BoiseHawks.com"] Hawks Beat Eugene Again, 11-9

The Boise Hawks beat the Eugene Emeralds Saturday night, 11-9. Jonathan Wyatt paced an 11 hit attack with a three hits including a three-run home run and an RBI triple. Dylan Johnston hit his third home run of the season, Ty Wright drove in a pair of runs and every batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit.

Oscar Bernard got the win in relief after starter Chris Huseby struggled. Steve Vento pitched two and a third innings of shutout ball and Mark Pawelek wiggled out of a jam in the ninth inning to preserve the victory.
