Apparently the Cardinals thought they had Morris, but San Fran decided to trade him to Pitt instead, and basically everybody in baseball, including Morris, is completely dumbfounded about this trade.

General manager Walt Jocketty thought he had an excellent chance at adding a bigger name, however. The Cardinals made a serious bid for right-hander Matt Morris before the Giants dealt Morris to the Pirates for Rajai Davis and a player to be named later.

"I think we felt very confident that we might be able to get a deal done," Jocketty said.

If you really wanted him, and you couldn't beat a deal of Rajai Davis and a PTBNL (probably nothing good), then it's your own fault, Walt.

I think the issue wasn't what was offered, but that the 'Rats piclked up his whole salary.

I'm still surprised by this trade.

local sports radio right now is great. Pirates fans are realizing that next season, Morris, Wilson and Izturis will comprise 1/2 the team's payroll

Ouch

Someone forget to tell them Izturis is a Free Agent?

They could pick up his option for next year. It would be extremely stupid to do, but it's the Pirates.

The Wilson to Detroit thing is not dead yet, more than likely to happen post waivers. Which is unfortunate, I think. Keep in mind that Bay & LaRoche are up for some big raises next year. As is Freddy. I'm not sure about Nady.

Whether the Pirates pick up Izturis' option is a thing of timing. We're supposed to get a new president by the end of the season. I suspec the new Pres will fire both littlefield and tracy and bring in his own people. littlefield would pick up the option, A new guy probably won't, who ever it is.

I wonder what Morris's reaction was when he found out he was going to Pittsburgh.

Something like this, I would guess:

Keep in mind, Morris was miserable in SF. It's not like he went from first to last. Based on what I've been reading today and yesterday, it seems that, other than Bonds' HR chase, there's less to watch the Giants for than the Pirates! (And, that says a LOT!)

That's true. He left StL just in time for them to win a World Series without him. He goes to SF, a club just tanking in every aspect other than the Bonds HR chase. I can imagine going to Pitt might not be all that bad given that.

Matt Morris..................highest paid Pirate EVER!!! At least that is what they were saying on XM this morning.

Next year. The formwer winner was Brian Giles.

I'd rather have Giles in his prime for what we're paying Morris than Morris in his prime for what we paid Giles.

I'm guessing he meant passing on Wieters' in the draft because they didn't want to pay his bonus demands yet going out and getting Matt Morris who sucks and is expensive. Or something like that.

What's really bothering me about this trade right now is Matt Weiters.

i'm not following you

The money spent on Morris/Izturis could've covered a 5 year major league deal for Weiters.

Not after you pick up his option next year.

I'm operating under the assumption of Wilson getting dumped this August/offseason with Izturis becoming the new SS for '08. I'd hope for a horrendous last 2 months by Cesar if I were you. But then again, he did the same for us last year, and there he was opening day.

If you're interested there's a damning write up of the Pirates Front Office here at BTF Post 104

It's out there, suggesting that the Pirates are losing on purpose(which I completely disagree with), but it does a nice job of summing up everything that's been wrong with the Pirates. I hope for you that the new prez cleans house, but I don't see it happening. I think it's gonna take some serious franchise devaluing, or somebody coming in with an out of this world overmarket bid on the Pirates(A scorned Cuban after the Cubs process?) to turn things around.

I don't get hwy everyone is so high on Raji Davis. He can't crack our lineup as a platoon. We're playing a converted catcher in right field tonight. We'd do the same without this trade.

The only issue with this trade is the money. (Pending, of course, who the PTBNL is. I can't stress this enoug!)

And the money is ridiculous, making it a pretty big issue.

Maybe the Pirates think they can flip Morris to a contender sometime this month. Morris certainly clears waivers given his salary. That would turn this deal into Davis + PTBNL for some other prospects that presumably are farther away but have more upside.
