Buster Olney just said on BBTN that the Red Sox are still the front runners for Gagne.

yeah...they have a pretty choice deal on the table for him...if the cubs match the deal or better it...it has a great possibility of hurting us

I wish people would stop pretending another bullpen arm is the biggest need.

I agree, unless getting Gagne allows us to spin Dempster off for the OFer we so desperately need.

Just mentioned this on the Score. Interesting.

they probably saw it on here. those hacks do little of their own research, i'm sure.

The idea of trading is to improve your team. Gagne instantly becomes our best arm in the bullpen and gives a different look wiht his change than marmol and wood would give with a slider. Who cares if our relievers are right handed or left handed. lefties off eyre .304 and righties 368. no way he should be on a major league roster right now. Gagne makes this team alot better. By having Gagne in waiting. It makes managers maybe pinch hit for a starting pitcher in a close game sooner to try and get to another reliever. Gagne is a game changer. Would be a great addition to the pen. He would also allow woody more days off having more stability in the pen. Marmol and Wuertz are tough on lefties with their sliders. Ohman 209 agianst lefties is ok, not great but adequate.

Yeah, the idea of trading is to improve your team, thats why most here would prefer a position player that is going to play in 50 more games to a reliever whos going to pitch 20 more innings.

It's down to the Brewers and the Red Sox according to BBTN.

Man, if they get him for a package around Gywnn, that will suck...hes a freakin 4th OF.

Red Sox get Gagne, according to Rotoworld.

Rosenthal is saying the same:

The Red Sox are on the verge of winning the Eric Gagne sweepstakes, pending his approval and a review of his medical records, according to major-league sources.

Gagne must waive his no-trade clause to Boston for the deal to be completed. It is possible the Red Sox will allow him to share the closer's role with Jonathan Papelbon.

Who said anything about Gwynn? BBTN?

If so, we could easily match that...

ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Eric Gagne chase is down to the Red Sox and Brewers.

He'd have to waive his no-trade clause to go to Boston, whereas the Brewers don't have to worry about that. Speculation is that the Red Sox are offering Kason Gabbard and David Murphy. The Brewers could part with Tony Gwynn Jr. and a pitcher. Both of those outfielders project as long-term reserves, but they could get a chance to start in center if acquired by Texas.

Better that he goes to Boston than Milwaukee.

True.

+2

I hope he waives the no-trade. Does he have something personal against Boston? I'd play in beantown in a second, but uh, nobody's asking

If Gagne doesn't waive his no-trade clause to go to a team with a legitimate shot at winning the WS, his picture must go next to the word 'stupid' in the dictionary from here on out.

Well yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Plus Boston is a great, GREAT baseball town, despite how I hate ESPN's biased coverage.

There's a financial side of it for Gagne. He has a games-finished clause in his contract. If he's not closing, that could be 3 million plus that he's losing if he's not the closer and Papelbon is. My guess is that Gagne will try to get the Red Sox to guarantee him an opportunity to close or guarantee a portion of the forfeited money.
