Yet he choose a career in radio? Anyway, doesn't make him anymore enjoyable.

Well, depends on your definition of well-educated. He's a Duke alumnus. Fits my definition, at least. As for a career in radio, I'm sure he's very well compensated for it. The show is a juggernaut in Chicago sports radio.

Sounds like a dream job to me, I'm not sure why you'd knock it. Highly paid to talk sports for 4-5 hours and laugh your butt off at idiots.

But I digress.

So is Mike North and I'm assuming he's uneducated. What's your point? Education means nothing in the entertainment field. Again, his education doesn't make him anymore enjoyable.

I never said it did. You called him an idiot. I refuted that point.

(BTW, not that it matters, but I find Mike North extremely irritating and unenjoyable, in large part because he is such an uneducated and ignorant d-bag).

I shouldn't say idiot, but he's so-called intelligence doesn't transfer to sports talk.

He comes up with some dumb ideas. But atleast he is a cubs fan and says good things about the cubs.

I'd rather listen to smart people intelligently criticize (and praise, when it's due) the Cubs than listen to some babbling idiot on the radio.

Murphy is a tard.

Oh so you'd rather listen to Boers, who I can guarantee he tells his phone people to purposely only let in the people with the stupidest questions on the air so he can criticize people on the air and be a "big tough guy" on the air, huh? Whatever floats your boat.

I've already stated once or twice in this thread that I think Boers is just filler. Bernstein is what makes that show tick, and yes, FWIW, I'd rather listen to that than a babbling moron like Mike Murphy.

Bernstein is the a-hole that takes all of the idiotic calls. Ok that's him then. When was the last HARD question Bernstein actually had to argue over with a phone caller? Seriously. Can you think of it?

Sports talk radio is horrible. Although the hosts are usually pretty bad, the people that take what they say as gospel and repeat it when discussing sports in real life are even worse. The people who call in should have to pass an IQ test before they're allowed on the air. Its an orgy of stupidity.

It's because his producer is letting these calls through to get the desired effect. People actually find this entertaining? Again, Howard Stern does this so much better.

I still think he's way smarter than your average sports talk jockey.

But yes, they control the calls, which is why you should never, ever call in to a sports talk radio show expecting an even playing field. They control the conversation, who gets on, who doesn't, etc. It's a show.

I agree Bernstein is very smart, but I thought you were talking about intelligent, critical sports talk, and B&B probably spend roughly 1/3 of the time actually talking sports. The rest is a mish-mash of other stuff.

I'm talking someone who is smart, critical, and actually talks sports the lion's share of the time. I don't think such a person exists on the score -- one of the reasons I really don't listen to the station all that much any more.

By the way, Boers spends most of the time babbling, sometimes his sentences are even incoherent to the point where Bernstein can't figure out what he tried to say. Just pointing that out since you said you didn't like to listen to 'babbling.'

I LOL'ed. This is true. I actually like the show a little more when Boers is on vacation and they have someone fill in with Bernsie.

Honestly, not gonna lie, a big part of the reason I'm such a fan of the show has been the last two football seasons and the way they handled all of the idiots who wanted Orton and/or Griese to play over Rex.

I always liked the show, but that just sort of cemented me into their corner.

I think they just let the idiots through. Think about it: most people would probably yawn and change the station if it was brainy, intelligent sports talk. They want to hear some fool make an idiot out of himself so they can laugh, or yell at their radios.

Generally speaking, I find Bernstein to be a pretty smart dude.

And if you don't, he'll let you know.

I do like him though.

Boers doesn't have to tell his producer that. 99% of people that call sports radio are idiots.

Exactly. I don't really buy the, "they only let the idiots through," argument.

I think a lot of people in general are idiots and even more people that call sports radio are idiots. They don't need to be "weeded out." They're the grass.

Me too. So many idiots called in in the fall and it was sweet to hear them manhandle 'em.

As someone who has been a sports talk show host, I can tell you that there isn't a radio station that hangs up on a potential caller. Anyone that calls, gets on the air unless they swear or talk in a threatning way to the producer that screens the calls.

Having said that B&B are morons because if you notice, they hang up on anyone who challenges there "authority" on sports.

Wouldn't that depend on the market? If you assume all sports stations ha the same amount of time to fill, but that some markets have many more listeners, and therefore callers to the show, some would be harder to get on than others.

Jersey.. even in huge markets like Chicago and New York, they take your calls..the difference between the major markets and a smaller like the one where my show originated (I did my show in Youngstown, Ohio which is a top 100 market) is that so many more people are trying to get on and you normally get a busy signal. When you do get on, you only have so many minutes depending on there commercial break.

For instance, if caller A gets on the air right after the break he or she has more time then caller B who gets on the air a minute or two before the next commercial break.

For me, I put the people who sound great on the air longer because that makes for great radio. Unfortunately, there are people in this business (and I get the feeling management at "The Score" maybe some of them) who feel that putting moronic idiots who have no business talking sports let alone talking sports over the airwaves makes for great radio (BTW, I'm talking about the callers, not the hosts).

The old moronic idiot factor. 8-)

There's little question in my mind that B&B let a few of the "good" idiots through just to have fun with them. It's sort of part of their schtick. And I think it does, as you suggest, get ratings if done right.

I like intelligent callers, but what I don't care for are the prepared-script callers like what Rome does all show long. I can handle it for a segment or two, but not if all your callers have some prepped script that they think is incredibly brilliant, but 99% of the time is just more drivel.

Posted

Soul, you hit the nail on the head with Rome and some of other "Rome sound a like" shows.

I'll be the first to admit the guy makes a crud load of money and has made it to the top. I'll give him credit for that but nothing else. What bothers me about his show is what you said Soul. Heaven forbid if Rome gets a "real" caller who knows his or her stuff. Rome couldn't hang with anyone like that and the intelligent fans like yourself and most of the people who log on to this website know that. That's why Rome's show is filled with callers who, like Rome, don't go into a locker room or clubhouse. So Rome and his callers know there is no chance that they won't confront the player(s) they rip, so they take the pu**y way out of it by ripping them on a talkshow.

Shows like that make me sick.

I agree the main problem I have with Band B is when they try to be funny I don't laugh. The best smart funny sports talk show was the old Kornheiser show on ESPN. I need to get XM so I can hear him again.

speaking of scripts, nothing is more excruciating than Bernstein's prepared rants that he launches into while pretending he just came up with it extemporaneously.

I've said this before and I'll say it again.

Bernstein by himself = very good.

Bernstein with Boers = so very annoying. It's like he's showing off for his juvenile friend.

Bernstein with Holmes = Fantastic. I look forward to the day when these two have a regular show together. They won't always be right, but they will have a legit case for their opinions.

I'm not a big fan of sports talk radio in general. I feel that a majority of the guys are just saying things to get a rise out of people because it brings in the ratings. I mean, there are some hosts who actually offer intelligent conversation but they are few and far between especially on the bigger stations and in the prime timeslots.
