An industry source confirmed today that the Orioles and Chicago Cubs have engaged in significant trade talks regarding outfielder Jay Payton as the non-waiver deadline approaches next week.

A Cubs' scout attended last week's series against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays at Camden Yards. Payton started two of the three games and went 2-for-8 with two RBIs.

In return for Payton, the Orioles likely would receive two mid-level prospects from the Cubs' farm system.

Although he was a beast for OAK in 06, I highly doubt Payton is the answer in the OF

Who is he going to replace in the OF? I guess Murton or less likely Pagan. Not a big fan of this move jimbo.

It really doesn't make much sense. Murton would be sent down I guess but we'd still have Soriano, Jones, Floyd, Pagan, and Payton for OFers...

I just can't see Payton as that everyday RFer we should be looking for. I fear Jim thinks it's Cliff Floyd which would explain the interest in Payton, I guess.

I would love for Hendry to explain to me how Payton would somehow be better than playing Murton.

If Payton replaces Pagan, then this isn't a bad move. Payton hits lefties fairly well. If he's going to spell Jones in CF vs lefties, he's an upgrade over Pagan.

If we're getting Payton to use in RF, Murton is likely his equal.

So, if Payton is replacing Pagan as the outfielder that can be used in all three outfield spots and give Jones a break against left-handers, it's not a terrible move....especially if it's for a couple of non descript prospects.

If Payton is expected to replace Murton or the need for another big bat, I'm not all that happy with it.

Its not worth whatever it takes to get Payton to upgrade to him over Pagan in CF. Not to mention Payton still has a year left on his deal. I don't see how this could be a good deal for us.

Payton was a beast for Oakland last year? He was decent against LHP, but was a pretty poor hitter overall.

Acquiring Payton makes no sense, even under vance's best case scenario as far as the usage of players.... Look, I know Pagan isn't great, and we can't expect him to keep performing, but the fact is, for the most part, Pagan has been a contributor... Lou clearly just doesn't like Murton....this move can't be explained any other reasonable way IMO.

I don't buy into the Payton talk. Hendry has made some dumb moves, but why would he trade anything to take on a 4th OF that is going to make $5MM next year? Even Hendry is not that stupid.

Maybe the Orioles are going to eat some of that...

Or maybe we can get the Orioles to take back Eyre and his salary.

I wouldn't refer to him as a beast for the A's last year. He put up a .296/.325/.418/.743 which was a 94 OPS+. Not to mention that he's due $5M next year. Please don't do this, Jim.

Starting to look an awful lot like the Cubs aren't going to be allowed to make a big splash before the deadline, isn't it.

Payton? Way to "go for it," there, Cubbies.
