The source, who told me about the Cubs scouting Stairs last week, said he heard from a contact in the O's organization that MacPhail and Hendry had had conversations recently about a Jones for Payton deal. Payton would be used as a right-handed platoon player for Pie in CF or Floyd in RF.

Both players are due to make $5M in 2008, so there would be no cash involved - both are free agents after '08. The O's want a left-handed DH/outfielder, who can be reasonably priced insurance if Corey Patterson doesn't re-sign.

Just a rumor. Not sure if the talks were early stage, ongoing or dead.

Payton's stats against left-handers in 2004-2006 are .346 OBP/.435 SLG seem to be in line with 2007: .360 OBP/.420 SLG.

JJ signed a two year deal before last season. He's a FA after this season so the deal for Payton is terrible.

DAMMIT! 3 year contract

Yeah, that trade wouldn't make much sense.

The Cubs need to get better vs LHP. They'd be able to slot Pie back into regular duty while resting him against the toughest LHP. I think it makes some sense. It's not going to greatly improve the team, but it would improve them without costing much of anything.

I didn't even know Payton was still playing. Murton is better than Payton.

Yeah I think the Cubs already improved themselves vs LHP -- albeit marginally -- by bringing up the lovable redhead. Murton > Payton.

I'd love that deal. At least Payton can get on base at a decent clip without first making you suffer through an 0 for 25 streak. Plus, Payton is in his walk year and Jones still has a yr on his contract.

Explain to me why this would be a bad deal for us.

EDIT: And by "get on base at a decent clip" I mean against left-handers.

CRAP!!! EDIT NO. 2: Payton also has a yr left on his K. He's still a better player than Jones, though.

If this is the best and only way to be rid of a crappy OF in 2008, sign me up.

EDIT: duh, he's not in his walk year, so unsign me up.

Payton's not in his walk year. Nor does he get on base at a decent clip. His career OBP against lefties isn't even .350.

Payton is not in his walk year first of all-he also has another year left on his contract.

Payton has had 0 seasons in the last 4 over a 95 OPS+, Jones has had 2.

Jones has the better chance to rebound to be something pretty good, while Payton is simply an expensive bench player at this point. If you look at 08 (when Floyd will almost certainly not be re-signed) who would you rather have as the 4th OF?

I don't think it's a terrible deal for the Cubs, but it's not a good deal either.

As you can see, I started my post after your first edit. I didn't see the next few posts or your second edit until after I had posted that.
