From Will Carroll:

Do the Cubs already regret trading for Jason Kendall? He's 1-for-15 and before anyone says "small sample size," I'll point out that his performance in Chicago only continues the precipitous decline seen in Oakland. The Cubs can't expect to contend with an offensive black hole at catcher. One possibility is trying to follow on the rumored Rangers-Braves deal--if the Rangers get Jarrod Saltalamacchia, the Cubs have asked their scouts for an opinion on Gerald Laird.

Laird's numbers on the year:

.237/.296/.353/.649

Luckily I haven't heard to much of an endorsement of Kendall by Piniella. The trade was pretty much a Hendry/Hughes thing.

Laird was pretty good last season, but has been just terrible this year. I don't know about him.

Admitting a mistake this quickly by making another trade for a catcher would be really out of character for Hendry.

we've already had six different catchers this year. And six different combos of catchers concurrently on the roster (maybe seven after the 3-catcher period...)

not saying it's bad that we're trying so many different things... but maybe we should find a reasonable option and end the tinkering at the 2-spot.

yeah because the .633 OPS he's sporting this year is exactly what we need to eliminate the "black hole" at C.

The cubs catching situation this year is comedy at its finest.

hahaha...only the cubs would try to correct the mistake of trading for Kendall by trading for Laird.

of course, one might say the mistake of trading for Kendall was preceded by the mistake of trading Barrett.

oh, and free Soto.

i love how the cubs convinced themselves that trading for kendall was a good idea, and now four games into his cub career they've already decided that he's washed up. I have A.D.D., and I'm way more consistent in my thought process than the boobs that run this organization.

This is pathetic. Cubs took a risk on Kendall and it backfired. We can tell the guy just doesn't have it anymore and the supposed "scouting" they did on Kendall was for what exactly? you wonder whose call it really was to bring Kendall here. Laird? Come on, if we are even looking at him as an option bring up Soto and call it a day. What a waste.

Laird had a .361 BABIP last season.... hence the good numbers.

His PECOTA projections peg him at around a .320 OBP/.750 OPS over the next few years, but I think they might be a little high. If he could be had for cheap I'd take him, but really, what's the point of all this when we have a decent option in the minors?

Summed up perfectly by Hendry saying that whether or not they trade for a bat depends on how they hit the rest of this week.

Floyd was really good yesterday, so we don't need another bat. We can just depend on him the rest of the year.

He's done it before.

I thought he was being sarcastic, considering that's exactly how he ended up with Kendall in the first place.

I don't think Hendry views trading Barret as a mistake. I was thinking of other times where Hendry has moved an at-the-time recent acquisition only weeks later, such as Matt Lawton and Jody Gerut.

Koyie Hill matched his season high in HRs July 16th hitting his 2nd one all season.

Meanwhile in Colorado, Soto has blasted 2 HRs the past 2 days for the Iowa Cubs.

Or Rob Bowen.

I really don't understand why they aren't giving Soto a chance. He's got an OPS over 1.000 in AAA and he'll give you better defense than Kendall. Makes absolutely no sense.
