On the field

Mike Mulligan on day 3 of Bears training camp

The first practice in pads closed with a little skirmish with rookies Dan Bazuin and Josh Beekman in the middle of things. Bazuin, a second-round defensive end out of Central Michigan, is fighting for a spot in the line rotation while Beekman, a fourth-rounder from Boston College, is a backup interior offensive lineman. Lance Briggs ran with the second team, as promised by coach Lovie Smith. He took part in just one play during the team portion of practice. Defensive tackle Antonio Garay and rookie running back Garrett Wolfe both sat out with hamstring injuries. Cornerback Dante Wesley made his daily interception, and quarterback Brian Griese threw his daily pick.

Does anyone have much insight as to how Walker does against the run?

I heard a stat saying that walker was the 5th or 6th most productive dt since 2003. that incuded passing and rushing defensive statistics.

omg this team is stacked.

I just heard Zac Zaidman(sp) on WSCR. Hes the Bears reporter for the station, and he said yesterday was really awesome. He said all the Bears were eating lunch when news regarding the trade was announced, and he said the whole team was "giddy". He said the feel in camp this year is one hes never seen, and that all the Bears players were ecstatic about the deal, and the fact that Angelo is doing what he can to put this team over the top.

Also he said Olsen has been spectacular so far in camp, and Rex has looked very good.

Olsen is amazing. He's basically a huge, tall, fast WR out there. I didn't think a guy that big could move & catch like that. If we can only get his blocking to average, he's going to be a monster no question in my mind.

Rex has looked very, very sharp in all the practices I've watched.

Hester had a few drops in practice yesterday though. Wolfe sat out his second practice, he was in just a shirt & shorts yesterday. They practiced in full pads for the first time, but the hitting was still @ less than full speed. Lovie is easing them in, which IMO is smart with a veteran team like this.

Our defensive depth this year is going to be just sick! 8-) How many teams can say they've got Super Bowl starters on the bench??

With Lovie at the helm you won't get full speed hitting hardly ever, if at all.

Reading both Philly message boards and Buffalo message boards, the word is that he's not very good against the run. However a few people have speculated that it is because Philly wants their tackles to beat their men and then go for the ball rather than just filling a gap. I've seen some people speculate that he's more suited for what Buffalo and Chicago do defensively than he was for Philly. Plus he's going to have Tommie next to him, so that can only help out.

i'm wondering if olsen is going to be a matt jones-type guy for us. that wouldn't be at all bad. other than the fact they're both white, they seem to be somehwat similar, although jones is a touch faster.

Last year in TC there was. Benson was actually injured on a huge hit from MB & BU in an early practice.

The hit I saw on video, which people said was when he was injured, was hardly huge.

We need to do a lot more football talk today, because I really don't want to have to spend my entire afternoon in the transactions forum...it makes my brain hurt to read all the craziness.

I came to the conclusion that I will no longer listen to anyone but this board when it comes to evaluating the bears. This conclusion brings me great peace.

With my overly giddy outlook regarding the Cubs this year, and my preseason enthusiasm for the Bears running at all time highs, I don't think it would be safe for me to be talking about both at the same time. Something might burst.

Well, I was at the practice when he got hurt, and there were a couple other very hard hits, enough to induce "woos" from the crowd. One was on Benson, and the other was a few scrimmage plays later when he paid someone back.

They were hitting full speed last year. Whether that means they will this year, I have no idea. It's fine with me either way, I think we know what our players can do now for the most part.

These Bear threads are better than 99% of the stuff at ChicagoBears.com. Ill check for news there but dont pay much attention to the discussions.

I have heard some reports out of TC so far that Adam Archuleta doesn't look so great...that is dissapointing to hear.....

He didn't seem to distinguish himself, but to be honest I didn't see Mike Brown flying all over the place either and we pretty much know what he can do when healthy.

I wouldn't read too much into it, especially with Archuleta & Brown, because they haven't been hitting full speed and that's the soup du jour for those two guys.

When the smacking starts, then we'll see if Arch & MB will be the devastating tandem we all hope they'll be.

At any rate we've got a more experienced Daneal Manning and Chris Harris ready to come in, so I'm fine with our Safety situation.

I've had my doubts about how much truth there was to the story that AA was misused in Washington. I'm sure the blame lies on both sides. It wouldn't surprise me if he turned out to be worthless, but I'm still holding out hope that Lovie will know how to use him by the time the season starts.

LOL.. they asked Urlacher about the big talk coming out of Detroit again this year, and he brought up how they "almost scored 40" against us last year.

Almost forgot about that.

I think Detroit will be better. But they have done little to show me that they can do the 2 most important things a winning football team has to do. 1. protect the QB. 2. stop your opponent from scoring at will.

The Lions' players think they will win 10 this year.

Yes they do. They did add a great talent @ WR. But I'm not sure they improved at really much else, and those other pieces were terrible last year.

Can one WR save you from being an otherwise bad team? I'll have to see it before I'll believe it.

Not unless he can keep your QB from being a tackling dummy.
