mlb.com[/url]"]The Cubs appear to have renewed their interest in Washington's Ryan Church as a fourth outfielder for their stretch run. The Cubs originally inquired about him during the Winter Meetings, but nothing came of that. The same obstacle may be in place this time: GM Jim Bowden is asking a high price for the young player. So far this season, Church is hitting .259 with seven home runs, numbers that are considerably down from 2006. He said he's not going to let the trade talk bother him.

"It's not up to me," Church said. "I have no control over it. If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. You have to look at it as another opportunity."

The Nationals are close to signing Dmitri Young to a two-year extension, according to multiple sources. Young is Washington's most important player this season. A leader in the clubhouse and on the field, he was leading the Nationals in hitting (.331), RBIs (52) and on-base percentage (.386) entering Thursday's action.

Not really any new info. Looks like they're interested in him as a 4th outfielder. Might as well just bring up Murton instead of trading prospects for Church.

I still want Church. FWIW, on the Nationals website they say the same things about us being interested in Church, so things may be heating up.

Just glancing at Church's stats again, and not too shabby. 8th in the league in doubles, .343 OBP despite a bit of a down year, SO:BB ratio not that bad.

There's really nothing to that. All of the teams' websites are tied into mlb.com, so what you see both places is really the same. This was one article posted on two related websites, not two separate articles from independent sources.

sorry to bump this, but a source of mine within the Nationals organization said that as of the time he left work tonight, Church for an A-Ball prospect was seriously being discussed

Cool. Hope Hendry pulls the trigger. Church would be a good acquisition.

I'm fine with that. Given the lack of anything being available, Church is a solid option who will only make the bench better can could somehow even catch fire at some point given a change.

ehh, I wouldn't be too excited about Church, I think the Cubs would only get him for the bench, and he has struggled with Washington when not getting consistent AB's.

He'd be a better option for CF than J. Jones at this point.

Where are you getting that from? Did you make that up?

If there's no big moves this would be the kind of small move that i'd like. A-ball prospect sounds a little too good to be true, but hopefully it is.

Church would be a very nice addition.

make what up? the article linked to in this thread said the Cubs were getting him to be a 4th outfielder.

I think I worded the second part wrong, he hasn't really struggled much with Washington, but if the Cubs are going to get him I want him to play every day, not sit in favor of Jacque or Floyd.

there are very few players on this team who play every day

I was seriously wondering if you had heard that Church needed consistant ABs to be effective. Im only going by his numbers and gamelogs (I havent really seen him play), but it looks like he is fairly effective as a non-every day guy in the past.

yeah, I thought I had heard that at some point in the past, I'm probably wrong though

I'm still not sold on the new and improved jacque that we have seen this month. Hopefully I'm wrong and he keeps it up, but given his play from earlier this year and Floyd's health, I think Church would play more days than not. He would be a better platoon option for Jones in CF than Pagan if nothing else(he hits LHP and RHP basically the same).

He's got a little pop and can get on base. His OPS+ the past two years is 120 and 128 respectively. Given that we probably won't get Griffey or Dunn, Church is by far the best way for Hendry to go. Get it done Jim!

I don't know about numbers wise, but I have just heard that he definitely wants to be an everyday player. i like him as a better option than jones in cf.

Big, big fan of adding Church. Especially if the A-Ball player rumor is true, since there's very little in either Peoria or Daytona.
My thoughts exactly.

This would be awesome.

Haven't ever gotten excited about Church.
