Alex Rios: Could the Cubs get him? Would you package Pie, Veal, Marshall, Cedeno and Soto for him. Would that be to much, not enough? Would the Jays trade Rios for the right package? We could trot out an outfield of Soriano - Jones - Rios for the remainder of the year, and figure something out in center for next season - possibly shifting Soriano back to center and placing Murton back in left.

Well, next year Pie will be in center from the get go.

Edit: Well, not if we traded him I guess.

Take out either Marshall, or Pie. I'm not giving up both.

I'm pretty high on both, Pie has great speed and has 5-tool potential. And Marshall has a great curve and can hit a dime 60 feet away, He's got deadly accuracy.

So you wouldn't trade

Veal,

Marshall,

Cedeno

Soto

or

Pie

Veal

Cedeno

Soto

for Rios?

This is the second time you've said this and it's the second time I'll call you out on it. Marshall's is above average at best. Where you get the idea that he's got this Greg Maddux laser eye control is beyond me. You certainly couldn't have gotten it from actually watching him pitch.

I would love to have Rios, but my question is why would the Blue Jays trade him?

Well, it's obvious they aren't going anywhere anytime soon, with the Yanks and Red Sox in that division. They signed Burnett and Wells to monster deals over the past two offseasons. I know they have money to spend, but would they be willing to spend it on Rios?

Rios is a 'Wilken' guy. Could Wilken convince the Cubs to trade away a bunch of prospects for Rios? Would Hendry listen? What does Rios contract look like? I for one, would love to have Rios in right, and batting 5th for the Cubs.

The Jays do it because they get a stud prospect in return in Pie, a #3 pitcher in Marshall, a 'possible' #2 pitcher in Veal, an ok to decent SS prospect in Cedeno, and a catcher to replace Greg Zaun who can't hit worth a lick.

I think the Cubs could possibly be overpaying on this deal, but it's an overpayment that would certainly be worth the risk...

why are people here so willing to send 5 players for 1?

a) it's unnecessary, as most deals are 2 or 3 for 1

b) the roster headaches that causes make it not worth it

Rios is the kind of guy that would be great to get, but as others have said, I can't see why the Blue Jays would want to trade him. The offer you mentioned might get it done, but that kind of overpayment by the Cubs might really hurt down the line. While I like Theriot, the question still lingers whether he is a full-time starter at SS for the next few years. Cedeno hasn't proven himself, but he definitely is a SS.

b) the roster headaches that causes make it not worth it

Couple Reasons:

1. Will Cedeno get a 'fair' shot here in Chicago - Probably not.

2. Will Soto get a 'fair' shot here in Chicago - Probably not.

Chicago won't use them, but Toronto could use them. (The Cubs 'could' use them, but won't). They wouldn't bring much in return on their own, so why not use them as extra's to the trade, to bring in possibly some cash in the deal.

Rios is 26 and already a stud.. Pie isn't a guarantee, but is still a top notch prospect. Marshall will never be more then a #3 at best, and Veal could end up being a better version of Dontrelle, or a huge bust.. And no fan would blink an eye over 'throwing in' Cedeno or Soto to get a player such as Rios.

Why put a number on the amount of players to get 1 stud, who is just entering their prime?

This doesn't make much sense.... Anytime you trade a prospect, you are flirting with disaster. Anytime you sign a free agent, same deal.. Toronto would be making just as big a risk as the Cubs, if not bigger, because Rios is a proven stud. Say the trade happened, and Pie proved to live up to his expectations in 3 years, while Marshall/Veal/Cedeno/Soto turned out to be career minor leaguers. And say Rios came to Chicago, ended up hitting 40+ homers, drove in 100+, and hit .300 with an OBP of .350+ over the next few years. Does this trade still 'not make sense?'

Just because Cedeno is a 'SS' doesn't mean much of anything. Izturis was a 'SS', but we all know what happened there.

Reasons this is a bad idea or it won't work:

Ricciardi probably won't be entertaining offers for Rios, no need to. If he did trade him the fanbase would not be pleased with him.

Related to that idea, Ricciardi is not going to trade Rios without a headline player coming back. Sean Marshall is not a good enough player or a big enough name for that.

Soriano is probably not going back to CF.

The difference between Floyd and Rios is not so much greater than the difference between Marshall and Mateo/Gallagher that we need to include Pie, Cedeno, Veal, and Soto.

Making a deal like that pretty much puts all your eggs in one basket. Rios better work out, because you just dealt the vast majority of your near major league ready commodities(Gallagher and Murton are the only one's left, and you have to use them to plug the holes you made by dealing Marshall and Pie EDIT: I guess EPatt is there too). Talent wise a deal of that nature may be worth it, but practically speaking it's a terrible idea. Dealing Pie and Marshall and Cedeno and Soto and Veal for a single outfielder kills your flexibility to go cheap at positions, or to trade for upgrades elsewhere.

I love Rios. That said Alexis Rios was given 426 AB's in his first year('04) where he stunk it up for his first month batting .230 and then dramatically improved from July to September.

Stinking it up for his first month sounds familiar to a first year outfielder we have. Don't make the trade, call back Pie, pay less, keep the second best rotation(ERA wise anyways) in the NL together, upgrade elsewhere. Sounds like a plan.

Rios was on a tear last year until he got hurt. So far this year his numbers are comparable to his pre injury stats from last year. His current numbers are not a mirage.

I'm not saying its a mirage. I'm saying Rios struggled in his first month and so did Pie with us. The difference is the Blue Jays didn't ship Rios back to the minors or out of town, they hid him in the bottom of the order until he started hitting. My post was just saying if we play Pie now, we might just have other team's fans posting their own "5 prospects for Pie" trade in 2 years.

As other posters have said, there's better use of prospects and more likely trades than a 5 for 1 deal that empties your stall of near-ready players and hurts the current rotation.

I'd trade any 5 prospects for Miguel Cabrera.

But would the Marlins take any 5 prospects you offered. Then again, the Marlins do a better job of scouting our system than we do.

 :x

But so true.

Read Baseball Fever much?

And I quote:

This kid could hit a dime from 60 feet away. His highest BB/9 was this season between Daytona and West Tenn with 2.96 which is still extremely good. Not only can he pinpoint his sinker but he can lock in his curve and change whenever need be. He needs to keep that control in order to be an effective future major leaguer. With his solid mechanics, he shouldn't have to worry about his control faultering that much though.
