Ben Maller is reporting:

While the manager emphasizes today, Cards GM Walt Jocketty tilts toward the future. Though insisting there will be no "sell-off," Jocketty might have an opportunity to stir the market with right fielder Juan Encarnacion, pending free-agent shortstop David Eckstein or a righthanded reliever. Anthony Reyes, who Jocketty insisted last July was not introduced in trade talks with the Florida Marlins, can now be had. Kip Wells' two-hit performance against the Florida Marlins on Wednesday might create value where none previously existed. -- St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Encarnacion would certainly look good in RF for the Cubs. Of course the question is whether the Cards would deal inside the division and how much would they want for him. He is an interesting option.

NO! NO! NO!

There's no point to doing this. Murton could outproduce Encarnacion with his eyes closed. If we're going to get a RF, it better be someone who's going to be an upgrade over Floyd/Murton.

Encarnacion is not horrible; he's just not good either.

2007: .281/318/463

2006: .278/317/443

2005: .287/349/447

He's consistently...meh.

He's also not much in the way of a platoon player as he hits lefties worse than righties.

I'd have to say no to Encarnacion.

He's just not good.

the people in my office are saying that the cards are looking to trade izzy... not sure if that would be something we'd be interested in. he's having a pretty solid year it appears.

Isn't Encarnacion like Jacque Jones but like, not as good?

I think the triumverate was Encarnacion, Wilson and Jones, as far as available OF who fit the Jim Hendry criteria. I assumed some time that year one of those three would wind up a Cub.

I'm sure Walt Jocketty would love to continue the Cardinals tradition of fleecing the Cubs.

Brock for Broglio, Sutter for Durham, Encarcion for Eric Patterson.

I am going out on a limb here because I am going to say this without looking it up. The Sutter/Durham trade was far from a fleece. I would even go as far as saying that trade might have been tothe Cubs advantage. Again this was without actually looking up numbers.

I think adding Encarcerated would be a terrible idea. So it wouldnt surprise me if Hendry did it.

I don't think it worked out that bad for the Cubs. Durham was a starter on the 1984 division championship team, and Sutter was ably replaced with Lee Smith. It was the later trade of Lee Smith for basically nothing that was the real fleecing.

and Durham was expendable because of Keith Hernandez. So the red birds got a Hall of Fame relief pitcher for a backup.

Al Nipper

Calvin Schiraldi

weren't "basically nothing". They were a strong negative.
