Samardzija having a rough start for Daytona. 4 IP, 9 hits, 4 ER.

My College of Charleston brother Michael Bunton got the start for Mesa today, and is also having problems. 4 IP, 8 hits, 3 ER so far.

Mesa goes down 6-0. Meyer gave up 3 runs in 4 innings after Bunton's start. Mesa only managed three hits; a double each for Andersen and Rosa and a single for Lara.

Daytona had a come-from-behind win in the opener of a doubleheader with Brevard County. Samardzija's final line: 6 IP, 10 hits, 4 ER's, 1 K/2 BB's. He was able to get the win. Kyle Reynolds hit a homer in the top of the 7th that turned out to be the game winner. Dope was 2/3 with a double and two RBI's. Matt Camp was 2/4 with a double and a run scored.

Iowa has come back to take a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the 5th. Felix just hit a grand slam! Murton and Kroeger each have doubles. EPatt is 0/2 with a walk and an RBI. Soto is 1/2 with a run scored.

Pie has hit 6 HRs over his last 10 games with a .372 BA, 11 Ks, and 2 BBs and the Iowa game isn't over yet.

umm...sorry, but jacque jones has rolled a couple twenty hop ground balls between infielders lately, and we all know that's going to continue.

Iowa hangs on to win 8-7. Bailey got the win, but he didn't have a real good start: 5 IP, 11 hits, 5 runs, 3 K's/1 BB, and he gave up a homer. Piggy and Howard each gave up a run in 2 and 2/3's. Rapada earned the 4 out save. Felix finished 3/4 with the grand slam and two runs scored. Kroeger added a solo shot. Murton and Soto each finished 1/4. Cedeno was 0/4 and EPatt was 0/3 with a walk and an RBI.

Peoria defeats Fort Wayne, 6-1. Pina had a good start: 5 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 3 K's/1 BB. Ceda struck out 3 in 2 no-hit innings of relief and Maradeo pitched two scoreless games to finish out the game. Blanco was the DH and was 1/3 with an RBI and a HBP. Canzler was 2/4 with two doubles and an RBI. Darwin Barney was 1/4 with a double, a run scored, and an RBI.

I'm tired of watching Cliff's struggles at the plate and adventures on defense. I think Pie should come up and play CF while Jones shifts to right, and Cliff shifts to the bench.

Yeah, that would make the most sense. If Floyd wants to play another year or two before his body completely breaks down, he's going to have to just accept a bench role.

Daytona was shut out in the nightcap, 5-0. Santo struggled as he gave up 4 hits, 5 runs, 5 walks, and struck out 1 in only 2 and 1/3. Koerber and Platt did pitch scoreless ball for the rest of the game. Dope was 1/3 with a double. His average is now up to a hefty .260. Camp and Clevenger had the only other hits.

I hear we have some guy named Wood starting Tues for Peoria, anybody ever heard of him?Scouting report?

He has a nice fastball. Scouts think he might be a little injury prone because he is such a hard thrower. He has the potential to be a strikeout king.

I've heard he's had horrible mechanics. Throws across his body...that sort of stuff.

Hello All!

I've got 8 extra seats to the Peoria Chiefs game in Peoria on Tuesday. I'm going to give these tickets to wonderful NSBBers. There's lots going on:

- Ernie Banks will be there. He won't be signing, but every person gets a chance to win autographed prizes

- Kerry Wood will be rehabbing - sure it's just an inning, but it'll still be fun

- Henry Blanco should still be with us

- Free hot dogs and popcorn through the 7th inning. Sure, the soda's $4 (for the big one) but at least you don't have to spend $20 on food

- It's NASCAR night - the Waste Management car will be there

Interested? PM me and I'll let you know whether I still have any left. Free dinner and Mr. Cub - life is good. Game time - 7pm.

By Jeff Lantz / Iowa Cubs

Pie's slam, his ninth homer of the year, turned a 5-3 Iowa deficit into a 7-5 Iowa lead and made a winner out of Iowa starter Cory Bailey, who improved to 3-1 on the year. Josh Kroeger's seventh home run of the year, a solo shot in the sixth inning, provided what turned out to be the winning run.

Pie (three hits) and Kroeger (two hits)combined for five of the Cubs' seven hits.

Clay Rapada picked up his 15th save of the year for the Cubs.

The Cubs are now 5.5 games behind Nashville in the standings after the clubs split their four game series.

Reynolds' Home Run Lifts Daytona to 5-4 Triumph

[VIERA, FL] Jeff Samardzija spotted Brevard County four runs in the first inning, but kept the Manatees off the scoreboard the rest of the way as the Daytona Cubs took the first game of a doubleheader, 5-4. Kyle Reynolds blasted a solo home run in the top of the seventh to fuel the Cubs to victory.

Samardzija advanced to 3-6 on the season as he went six innings for Daytona. The right-hander scattered ten hits and gave up four runs, walked two and struck out one. The Cubs improved to 12-17 as they snapped a three-game losing streak. Brevard County fell to 16-13, as Kevin Roberts (4-3) took the loss for the Manatees.

Reynolds went 3-for-4 to lead the Daytona offense. He singled twice, homered and scored a pair of runs. Brian Dopirak and Steve Clevenger drove in two runs each.

The Manatees got to Samardzija in their first at-bat. The first four Brevard County hitters roped base hits. Darren Ford bounced one up the middle for a single, then Lorenzo Cain sliced a triple down the right-field line to plate Ford and give the Manatees a 1-0 advantage. Mat Gamel followed with a double down the line in left to make it 2-0. Mike Bell beat out a bunt for a base hit to put runners at first and third with nobody out. Chris Errecart grounded out to drive Gamel home, and Yohannis Perez's two-out RBI single to right field scored Bell to give Brevard a 4-0 lead.

The Cubs, after leaving runners on base in the first two innings, finally cashed in in the third inning. Jonathan Mota drew a leadoff walk, and Reynolds ripped a single to left to put two runners on with one out. Dopirak bounced a ball through the left side of the infield to plate Mota and cut the deficit to 4-1. With Reynolds at third, Clevenger lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 4-2 game. The runs snapped an 11-inning scoreless streak for the Daytona offense.

Daytona chipped away in the top of the fifth. Mota again drew a leadoff walk and went to third on a single by Matt Camp. A Brian Dopirak double to the gap in right-center scored Mota, and the Cubs trailed, 4-3. Steve Clevenger followed with an RBI groundout, scoring Camp to tie the game at 4-4.

After Reynolds homered in the top of the seventh, Yusdel Tuero slammed the door in the bottom of the frame to pick up his first save of 2007.

Garrison Three-Hits Daytona

[VIERA, FL] Steve Garrison stayed hot on the mound for Brevard County as the lefty shut down the Daytona Cubs, 5-0, Sunday at Space Coast Stadium. With the loss, the Cubs split a doubleheader with the Manatees.

Garrison held Daytona to three hits on his way to his fourth win in as many starts. He went the distance, going seven shutout innings, allowing three hits, a walk and six strikeouts.

Steve Clevenger extended his hitting streak to five games with a single in the second inning. Brian Dopirak doubled for the Cubs and Matt Camp had the other base hit for Daytona.

The Manatees took the lead in the second inning. After a Mike Bell single and a walk to Chris Errecart, Freddy Parejo ripped a double down the left-field line to score both runners and give Brevard a 2-0 advantage.

Brevard County added onto the lead in the third. Lorenzo Cain led off the frame with his first home run of the season. After a Mat Gamel walk, Mike Bell belted a homer to left, and the lead ballooned to 5-0.

Joel Santo (7-5) took the loss for Daytona as the Cubs dropped to 12-18 in the second half. Garrison, now 8-4 on the year, lifted the Manatees to a 17-13 record.

The Cubs return to Jackie Robinson Ballpark tomorrow for a Belly Buster Monday against the Palm Beach Cardinals. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.

Up to the millisecond line on Burke: .283/.411/.517/.928, 11/14 BB/K. He has a near 1.200 OPS this month.

It would definitely be nice if the Barrett trade turned into something worthwhile.

Isn't that a pretty drastic turn around on his K ratio. Are the Cubs teaching patience in the minors again.
