Mesa lost 8-7 in 10 innings. Oswaldo Martinez was superb once again, going 4 scoreless and hitless innings, racking up 4 strikeouts, 1 walk and 2 HBP. I'm hoping to get a scouting report on him soon but the .240 BAA and 22 K/2 BB in 20 innings are pretty nice. Korean-native Simon Lee - Steve Wilson's first signing in the Pac Rim - threw 2 scoreless innings and got 3 Ks.

Darwin Barney and Tony Thomas are still in Mesa and Cliff Andersen came off the bench so it looks like he's healthy. He had missed 3 straight games.

Samardzija with a very mediocre outing as Daytona loses 10-2 in game 1. Jeff gave up 9 hits, 5 runs, 3 ER, 3 K's/1 BB, and gave up a HR. Phelps came in to pitch the final inning and a third and gave up 5 runs in that span. Ryan Harvey went 2/3 with a double. Chirinos and Reynolds went 1/3. Alan Rick and Matt Matulia had the lone RBI's for Daytona.

Iowa lines up like this:

Patterson-2B

Pie-CF

Cedeno-SS

Murton-RF

Kroeger-LF

Nelson-1B

Moore-3B

Richie-C

Wells-P

Steve Clevenger with a two run single in the top of the first.

This is his last game with Boise. He'll report to Daytona after the game!

Wow, interesting!

Question for anybody who has listened or watched Boise or has any inside dope: any indications how Clevenger is doing defensively at Boise? The way he's been hitting the ball, I'd love to see him able to catch well.

I've watched at most games, and followed them pretty closely...he's hit well, and with the overcrowded catcher situation, it's a good move for him. He played at Boise in '06 as well.

I haven't really paid much attention to his catching, BUT there's not been any glaring miscues!

Good for him...his bat is ready! Nice to hear his defensive skills might be up to par too.

The MIF situation is interesting, Barney and Thomas should be headed up to Boise or Peoria soon.

Murton, Moore, and Pie all have gone deep tonight against Round Rock. All were off of Troy Patton, one of Houston's best pitching prospects. :D

And a lefty...so Pie is doing well against LHP since being demoted.

I thought the 10 day rule is voided when the club makes a trades.
It is if a player is coming back to replace an injured player, but I don't know about a trade. It wouldn't be applicable in this case anyway, because the player the Cubs are receiving (Kendall) replaces the player the Cubs traded (Bowen), so there isn't a vacant spot on the roster to be filled. In fact, someone needs to go down (probably Hill or Soto) to make room for Kendall since Petrick came up.

Murton has his stroke back, it seems. He's now up to .309/.384/.545/.929 with 4 HR's, 12 2B's, and a 1:1 K:BB ratio (12 for each). It's been 110 AB's.

He could help the ball club right now. I won't bother speaking of Cedeno, who is ready as well.

You know, looking at all the home-grown talent making an impact with the parent club this season has made me happy.

Heard from someone who saw the Iowa game that Murton dazzled defensively. He got the OF assist on a fine throw and he made a few nice running and diving catches.

Daytona won game two of their DH on a walk-off bases loaded suicide squeeze.

From Road to Wrigley:

Since Matt Murton can’t play right field, he must’ve just been lucky tonight.

First he made a hustling catch near the visitors’ bullpen, quickly righted himself and gunned down Round Rock’s Danny Klassen trying to tag up and go from second to third with Iowa trailing 1-0 in the top of the fourth.

Then, looking right into a glorious sunset, he made a sparkling shoestring grab to rob Mark Saccomanno in the top of the fifth, the I-Cubs still trailing by the same score.

Having thus flashed his arm and glove, he drew a bat from his quiver in the bottom of the fifth and launched a drive over the wall in center to tie the score and send the I-Cubs on their way to a 10-3 win.

John Nelson was 3-for-4 in the win

By Andrea Breen / Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs launched four home runs to derail the Round Rock Express, 10-3, Monday night at Principal Park.

Matt Murton started the home run barrage in bottom of the fifth inning with Iowa trailing, 1-0 as he hit a solo shot. Two batters later, John Nelson singled and Scott Moore homered, giving the Cubs a 3-1 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, Brooks Conrad hit his second home run of the game to pull the Express within a run. The Cubs blew the game open in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Felix Pie led off with a home run, his third in two games. Ronny Cedeno, Murton, Josh Kroger and Nelson all singled and scored following Pie's blast to extend the Cubs' lead to 9-2.

Nelson, who was 3-for-4, hit Iowa's fourth homer of the night in the eighth inning. Tony Richie added three hits in the win.

Randy Wells picked up the win for Iowa, his fifth of the year, throwing five innings, allowing one run.

Round Rock starter Troy Patton was tagged with the loss.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Daytona Splits Doubleheader With Reds

Exciting Finish Caps Off Luminous Night

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] On a gorgeous Belly Buster Monday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark, the Cubs saved the best for last. Game one of the doubleheader was all Sarasota as they rolled 10-2; but, the Cubs would exact revenge in game two as they topped their opposition 3-2 in dramatic fashion.

Jeff Samardzija occupied the bump for Daytona in the first of two at "The Jack" but earned his sixth loss of the year as he worked five and two thirds, allowed five runs (three earned) on nine base hits as he walked none and struck out three.

Samardzija exited the game in the sixth and left a manageable three-run deficit but a five-run seventh ballooned the Reds lead to eight runs as Sarasota cruised, 10-2.

Ryan Harvey went two-for-three with a double in the losing effort as Alan Rick and Matt Matulia drove in the only Daytona runs.

Game two pitted two relievers against each other as Robert Manuel took the hill for Sarasota and Scott Koerber earned the start for Daytona.

Koerber tossed a scoreless first but Manuel didn't fair as well in his half inning. Chris Walker led off with a five pitch walk, Nate Spears sacrificed Walker to second and reached on a fielding error to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Kyle Reynolds laced a single to right which was sure to score the speedy Walker but a perfect throw by Cody Strait retired him at the plate. With one down, Brian Dopirak rocketed a double to straight-away center to score Spears and Reynolds to give the Cubs a 2-0 edge.

A scoreless second and third led to a top of the fourth where Koerber allowed two runs on three base hits to equalize the game, 2-2.

Alan Rick would lead off the bottom of the fourth with a high fly ball to deep right field that Strait could not handle and resulted in a costly three base error. But Daytona could not capitalize as an errant throw catapulted Rick towards home. A good recovery and better throw from the backstop outed Rick at the plate.

Chuck Platt threw a scoreless inning of baseball before he was hit on a comebacker to the mound which would send him to the locker room early. Darin Downs took over pitching duty in the tie ballgame and pitched magnificently. In two innings, Downs hurled hitless scoreless baseball to keep the Reds at bay.

With the game knotted up, the finale at Jackie Robinson would be one the fans would soon not forget.

Matt Matulia worked the count and drew a six pitch walk, and Daytona's newcomer Jeff Rea laid down a sacrifice that materialized into his first base hit with the club. Mark Reed moved the runners up ninety feet with a bunt of his own and the Cubs had runners on second and third with one down. Walker drew an intentional walk and the bases were loaded for fan-favorite Nate Spears. Spears had proven clutch in a Daytona uniform before; and with the game on the line, Spears would get another chance to validate his worth. With a one-one count and the win hanging in the balance, Matulia broke for home. Spears squared up and laid down a resplendent bunt down the third base line to score Matulia and win the game for Daytona, 3-2.

BoiseHawks.com"]Hawks Hold on to Forst with 7-3 Win Over Tri-City

The Boise Hawks beat the Tri-City Dust Devils Monday night, 7-3 .Arik Hempe pitched the first five innings for the win. He allowed three hits, including a pair of home runs to Brandon Reichert and Helder Valezquez. He did not allow a walk and struck out five. Al Alberquerque finished up allowing one run in four innings to pick up his first save of the season.

Steve Clevenger playing in his last game for Boise had a pair of hits and three RBI's. Clevenger was promoted to the Cubs affiliate in Daytona, FL. finishing up as the leading hitter over the first third of the season for the Hawks. Ty Wright drove in two runs with a pair of hits and Mark Sawyer drove in two with a bases loaded double in seventh inning. Marques Smith had three hits and scored twice.

BA Prospect Blog"]Oswaldo Martinez, an 18-year-old righthander out of the Dominican Republic, threw four hitless innings in the AZL Cubs 8-7 loss to the Brewers. Martinez now has 22 strikeouts and two walks in 20 innings.
