This exchange is especially important in my opinion...

Q. Perception has become reality in many stories concerning the Cubs. You hear that the Cubs won't be able to spend money to acquire players at the trading deadline. Can you address that and talk about whether you'd even be able to take on a player whose contract runs past this year?

A. If Jim were to come to me and he were to present a trade that he thinks would be advantageous for the Cubs this year and in the future, we would absolutely take a look at it. We're not being handcuffed by anybody.

Last year, we stated our mission. Our mission is, "It's time to win. We need to get into the winning business." Jim and I have had numerous discussions about what he might be thinking after the break. We are going to be in the race, I'm very confident of that.

that's a vote of confidence if i ever heard one.

I think there's no doubt they would have to think long and hard before adding significantly, but they have always done that.

Talk is cheap. If we are going to play as good as we have been and we're really close to the division or wild card I'm certain Hendry will make a move to improve the team if what he says is true. If we're close and no move is made then we know our answer.

Isn't that a lot like your parents telling you "We'll see" after you beg for a new toy?

Anybody know where Matt Lawton, Jody Gerut, or Fred Mcgriff are these days?

No, but I'm pretty sure I know where Aramis Ramirez, Kenny Lofton, and Nomar Garciapara are.

And lest we forget a certain first baseman?

You must be talking about Randall Simon, because Derek Lee wasn't a deadline deal.

Lawton was released by the M's in May

Gerut hasn't played in MLB since 2005

McGriff is retired :)

Neither was Gerut right? Dubois was traded for Gerut who was in turn traded for Lawton if I remember right. I'm not sure about all of it but I do not think Gerut came at the deadline at least

not deadline, but it was July.

It should be added that the Lawton & McGriff deals were very good trades on paper; like Nomar they just didn't work out.

Cubs effectively gave up Jason Dubois for Lawton, who up until he put on a Cub uniform was having a very solid 810 OPS year and was a perennial 350-360 OBP guy. Of course, Lawton's career went into the toilet when he was busted.

And the Crime Dog deal was a bigger steal; they gave up a couple of scrubs named Manny Aybar and Jason Smith.

Here's McGriff!

To be fair, the defensive drills video is really awesome. In fact I'm so impressed I've given it my full endorsement!
