i think there is some hope that comes with this. Cuban is a very determined guy that I don't think will be content with a denial by the mlb when he has the highest bid.

If Wagner is involved as well with the bid, there's going to be no easy way for MLB to deny them.

And the Cuban/Wagner assets (entertainment and online media holdings) would be a lot more attractive to integrate into the Tribune than what other ownership groups offer.

Not sure what you think this has to do with Tribune since they are divesting themselves of an asset...that being the Cubs. There would be no integrating programming into the Tribune.

According to Mike North today on the Score (yes I know, consider the source) who is fairly tight with Reinsdorf, Jerry told him that there is no way the owners will allow Cuban to join their conservative little fraternity of MLB owners.

The best thing for MLB would be for the Cubs to win a title.

Honestly.

Could you imagine what kind of attention that would draw the game?

Of course, mlb doesn't care. they're too busy taking down video highlights off youtube.

Again, who other than Reinsdorf is going to oppose it?

Is it MLB owners or just NL ones?

Not that my opinion matters to them...but I think its such BS that Reinsdorf (or any other owner) has any say at all in who Zell/the Trib sells the Cubs to...its downright unAmerican.

okay, so fill me in here, as I haven't been following this too closely. This Zell (or whoever) guy is buying the team just to sell it again? Or is he buying the entire Tribune Co.?

It's all MLB ones. The only three I can think of who wouldn't support his bid would be Angelos, Glass and Reinsdorf.

So how does this process work? I'm assuming the Trib will go with the highest bidder. Can Cuban compete?

And is it a simple majority vote by the owners?

I understand Reinsdorf, and can MAYBE understand Glass, but why would Angelos care? Is Chicago infringing on Baltimore's territory like the Nats are?

He's buying the Trib but selling the Cubs, I believe.

Excellent news. Hopefully, he's given a fair shake. I'd love to see Maverick Mark buy the team.

Does anyone really believe Cuban stands a chance in h*ll? I wish he had a fair shot, but am highly dubious of the the old boys club headed by Selig..

No chace in hell will he ever own a MLB team. Will never ever happen.

If Marge Schott had a team for so long they can learn to live with Mark Cuban.

Which is why baseball wouldn't allow it. They went through hell with Marge and they aren't going to let it happen again. I think it would be great for the game, but the custy old-school owners wouldn't like him.

They already regret allowing Jeffrey Loria into the fold.

If its not unAmerican, its at least a Conflict of Interest and Collusion.

Perhaps even a Breach of Fiduciary Duty to the Chicago Cubs fan base... I know we have a few law students here that could serve as my law clerks for this class action suit.

Because Angelos and Reinsdorf share the same brain. Aren't those the two idiots that brought us the work stoppage?

Tribune had a say in who purchased the Red Sox, the Brewers, the Braves, etc, etc. Why should this be any different. The owners (or their reps) vote on this at the quarterly meetings.

Zell is buying the Tribune and taking the company private. I believe there are two main reasons that he is selling the Cubs. One, most important, is his ownership interest in the Chicago White Sox as MLB does not allow one to have an interest in more than one club. And two, to raise funds to put against the huge debt that will be required for the leverage buyout of the Tribune.

To help finance the deal, Tribune said it would sell the Chicago Cubs and its 25 percent stake in local cable channel Comcast SportsNet Chicago after the 2007 season. It will also take on $8.4 billion in new loans, leaving the company with more than $13 billion in debt and the most encumbered balance sheet in the newspaper industry.

The Braves sold for $1.27 billion? Maybe it is possible the Cubs will sell for over $1 Billion.

Forbes evaluation of team worth seems to be a little off when compared to these sale prices. (Braves and the potential Cubs sale)

http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/04/17/06mlb_baseball_valuations_land.html

Yeah I don't see the Braves being worth $400M when they were just bought for three times that. Those estimates all seem a little low, and I think the top end teams are, in some cases, worth considerably more than what they were appraised at.

Ya there's no way the Bravos are going to be worth more than the Cubs. Granted they do probably get a TON off TBS and the other myriad of channels they are on, but the Cubs' merchandise sales, etc, are surely much higher.

I'd think the Boss would favor Cuban. I also think Hicks and Cuban have a good relationship.

I'm sure there's going to be a lot of backroom back and forth over this. In the end, hopefully Maverick Mark wins out.

I think that total is misleading because there were stock shares changing hands as well....

Yeah. I don't think the Braves were priced anywhere near that. From the article it looks like Liberty Media gave up $1.27 billion in Time Warner shares in return for Braves, some magazines, and 1 billion in cash.

Did I misread that? That's what it looks like to me, so it looks like this was a stocks for Braves trade.
