What I've been seeing in names being mentioned, I don't think Hendry can do anything that won't piss off a ton of people. Most of the big names are rentals and people will be pissed if he gives up young players. If he doesn't make a big deal, people will be pissed because he didn't make a big deal. I'm not defending Hendry, but I can see the critics lining up and ready to pounce on July 31st no matter what happens. I think the only way he can please everyone would be to trade Jones, Izzy, and Eyre for Arod plus cash and then resign Arod to an extension at $1 million per year for the next 5 years.

I don't know if that is true. But the fact of the matter is that it is Hendry himself who painted the Cubs into this corner. So no matter what happens I think the criticism can be justified.

Deep inside of me I'd like to see Hendry trade Z for A-Rod straight up. I don't think Z will be in a Cub uniform next year and Z has a lot of miles on a young arm. He's the bait that can actually bring in what the Cubs desprately need, more bats.

I know it won't happen though.

That would be tempting, but I just don't have faith in any of our other pitchers to step up to being the ace of the staff. If there was some way to be sure that Zambrano wasn't going to resign, I'd be all over the deal.

And who starts game one of a playoff series? (or game 2-3-4 for that matter?)

Your choices are Hill, Lilly, Marshall and Marquis at that point...that's not a playoff caliber rotation....

If they're not a playoff calibur rotation without Z they are not one with him either.

Z has the worst ERA+ and 4th worst WHIP of the five current starters.

Not advocating this, but in typical cub-luck the best player to meet the following criteria:

RH bat

can play right field

plays for a team out of contention

can provide power and drive in runs

one year rental

low salary commitment

would only require 2nd tier prospects to acquire

is the one player Hendry and Co. will not acquire.

I imagine the rebuilding Rangers move him at the deadline

After looking for a right-handed bat among the available players, the bigger names (Burrell, Dye, Andruw Jones, Hunter, etc.) all seem to be very expensive in terms of players and contract. I think there are some secondary bats that could serve the purpose. Three names that come to mind are Gomes (Rays need pitching), Thames (Tigers need middle relief), and Cruz (Padres need bench help). While none of these players are in the Arod category, each of them could be very valuable as a role player.

That's a good idea to start another thread on another series of trade what-if's, I'm sure it wouldn't have fit somewhere in the other 7 trade threads you've initiated on the first page of the forum.

kinda the purpose of the forum, though, isn't it?

I think the entire forum should be one very long thread simply listing actual transactions that have taken place, with no follow-up commentary, analysis or criticism. Just the facts, ma'am. Just the facts.

While one can never really be certain from one year to th next if the window of opportunity is opening or closing, I believe the Cubs better days are in front of them. Their impact players (Soriano, Lee, Ramirez) are all in the prime of their careers. They have a pretty decent rotation that has plenty of upside in Hill and Marshall. And they have some good youth in Pie, Therot, Pagan and Fontenot.

If the Cubs believe they can and will re-sign Zambrano, then I would not be that upset if "significant" move(s) were NOT made by July 31. While they've been playing well of late, I don't want them "breaking the bank" because the might get to 87-89 wins and have a shot in the playoffs. That's the impetuous line of thinking the Cubs are so famous for doing in the past (remember Matt Karchner and his impact). I think this team (even in its current state) can be better next year than this year.

I'd rather the Cubs stand pat as opposed to making some desperation move that might pay off this year but come back to haunt them in the future.

Soriano is not in the "prime" of his career unless he's going to be playing as long as Minni Minoso or Julio Franco.

He's 31 and will be 32 next January.

Dragnet threadjacking trivia:

What is Sgt. Friday's badge number and why?

714, because that's how many home runs Babe Ruth hit. Either that, or it's because that's the badge number worn by the show's technical advisor.

31 is past prime? news to me. Other players past their prime:

A-Rod(32 this month)

Vlad(31)

Jeter(33)

DLee(31)

Tori Hunter(31)

Not to mention players like sheffield and griffey who aren't in their prime, but when healthy can contribute very late in their careers. 31 may be in the later part of their prime but surely not out of it.

It's past prime. It does not mean end of career. It means past their prime, which typically occurs from around 26-28/29 in hitters.
