Bruce[/url]"]The Cubs’ recent run to respectability has put them in the National League Central race for good. Look for them to be buyers as the July 31 non-waiver trading deadline nears.

•Yes, general manager Jim Hendry will have the resources to add payroll for the stretch drive. He reiterated that to me over the phone the other day, saying nothing has changed since Opening Day, when the Tribune Co. announced it would sell the team.

I know a lot of people are worried that the Cubs won't be buyers at the deadline because of the pending sale, but looks like it might be the opposite. Good news for the playoff race.

A good article from Bruce. Definitely worth the read. Lots of good stuff in there.

While I'm glad to hear this news, how much payroll could Hendry conceivably add? After the whole Jacque Jones to the Marlins fiasco, I'm worried that there are so many places a potential trade veto could come from that any efforts on Hendry's behalf could be for nothing.

I'd love to see this team have some of its weaknesses addressed, don't get me wrong, but I won't believe it until I see it.

Excellent news! Now, will the purchase be Griffey, Dunn or ARod. 8-)

That all sounds great, but we've already had one transaction shot down by Selig. Who's to say it won't happen again? I'm concerned.

i thought that had been de-bunked by now. it was hendry that called off the deal; not selig of zell, no?

MLB and Hendry both refuted the rumors that Selig stopped the trade.

back on topic, i'm still not sure what the most likely options are. the biggest areas of need for the cubs are probably SS, CF, C and maybe RF.

at SS, i'm not sure what upgrades are really available, except for maybe Renteria. i doubt that with the Braves in the race. of cours A-rod is a very, very long shot. i'd be beyond shocked.

CF is tough becuase Hendry won't want to "block" Pie. Lofton might be a possibility. i will once again advocate the idea that maybe Soriano can move back to CF for the rest of the year with Murton in LF and Floyd/DeRosa/Pagan in RF.

C is a long shot unless Saltalamachia (too lazy to spell) is available. even then, the Cubs likely don't have the chips to trade for him.

in RF there is Abreau, Griffey and a few others depending on how much $ Hendry really is able to take on. certainly getting someone to take on Izturis/Jones salary would be helpful, but i don't see that happening.

they don't need to update all of these areas. i think the addition of one big bat along with some roster tweaking could be enough.

I fail to see the big deal about the Jones trade. It looked to me like Hendry just felt he was getting screwed and that he might have been counting on better offers.

agreed. i think way too much is being made of this. i think (hope) Hendry just figured out it was pointless at the last second.

it sounds like the mets might be a viable option for jones with another OF going down. they are also one of the few teams who might be able to take on the salary if Hendry asks for little in return.

I suspected this was the case all along. Hendry's held back some payroll money to work with this year, and there are no higher-ups that will stand in the way of his short-term plan.

The big asterisk, though, is that Hendry very likely doesn't have the latitude to acquire players that are signed beyond this season, unless future salaries are somehow balanced out. That'd all but eliminate guys like Griffey, Tejada (a Hendry favorite), and several others.

If we can add payroll why haven't we signed Z yet? That's what I want to know. I think by "adding payroll" Hendry is probably referring to taking on short term deals (probably impending FAs)

Bill Hall is out for Milwaukee, so we'll send them Jock for Cordero, Sheets and Braun

LETS THROW IN IZTURIS AND GET J.J. HARDY!

I agree. Unless, Zambrano is no longer willing to sign that deal or negotiate a new one until after the season.

Think Dunn is really the only guy who we could legitimately acquire at the deadline who would address our 3 most glaring weaknesses (offense at RF, C, and SS). The Reds will hang on to Griffey as long as he's "chasing" 600 HRs and there just aren't any catchers or shortstops out there who can give up a .750+ OPS and are truly "available."

Any chance we can find a catcher that can get a hit once in a while, since the cubs for some reason are pretending that they do not have Soto? Edited by Roast

nope, we already had one of those once

BUT HE TATTLED ON THE CLUBHOUSE MEETING, DUH!

Technically, Koyie Hill has a higher OPS than Barrett since the trade:

29 AB's, .172/.250/.310

compared to for Barrett

37 AB's, .243/.243/.297

They are all terrible though. I certainly did not think that after 3 weeks all 3 catchers (Hill, Barrett, Bowen) would all be under a .600 OPS. It appears that Barrett has lost the starting job in SD already-now it's time for one of Hill/Bowen to lose their job to Soto.

and as we all know, it's much more important to have someone who won't snitch than to have someone who can hit a baseball

Of course, we didn't really have anybody that could hit the baseball at catcher before the trade either. Too bad San Diego doesn't have one either, since they have to start Josh Bard now.
