Should he drop his appeal and serve his suspension now? The Cubs next 4 games are against the Nats and the Pirates. This seems like a good time for the team to be without him. He is also struggling of late. What do you think? Edited by B

Good....for your sake. I was about to go Ty Cobb on you. Was unsure whether to pistol whip you, spike you, hit you with a bat, or strangle you.

Yes, absolutely.

Better for him to miss 5 games against the Nats and Pirates than 5 games against some combination of the Astros/DBacks/Giants/Cardinals.

I don't see any logical reason for him to NOT just serve it now.

I said no, only because I think there's a reasonable chance of it being shortened by a game or two on appeal. I'd rather lose him for 3 or 4 games later rather than 5 now.

I'm not sure if this is true, but maybe he wouldn't be able to partake in any of the All Star Game festivities if he was currently under suspension. Not sure if that is important to him.

I don't think that's true. The All-Star game I think is completely separate from the regular season. But if he started the suspension immediately it would be over before the All-Star game anyway.

I said yes because knowing the Cubs' luck he would either serve his suspension against Arizona or during the Philly/New York stretch.

No, for three reasons:

1) Teams like the Giants/Astros/Cardinals are about on par with the Pirates/Nationals. It doesn't make much difference.

2) The number of games could go down when the appeal is heard

3) I'm sure most of you have heard me mention this before, but the Cubs face 3 left-handers in the next 5 games. The dropoff from Lee to Ward against right-handers-not that much. Against left-handers? Massive. The Cubs will be better off having Lee serve his suspension when less of the games are against left-handers, because then Ward will be more of an asset in the lineup.

If you had Lee serve his suspension starting today, here is what the starting lineup would look like today, and for 3 of the next 5 games:

Soriano

Theriot

Ramirez

DeRosa

Fontenot

Ward

Pagan

Bowen/Hill

That's not a good lineup when you consider that Ward cannot hit lefties, Bowen/Hill cannot hit anybody right now, and Pagan is struggling.

If you had Lee serve his suspension when right-handers are mostly on the mound, here would be the lineup against a right-hander:

Soriano

Theriot

Ward

Ramirez

Floyd

DeRosa/Fontenot

Pagan/Pie

Bowen/Hill

That's a much better lineup. The top 6 all hit right-handers well (or at least Theriot is better against right-handers this year than left-handers).

Yes. I'd rather him just get it over with. MLB isn't going to shorten it.
They frequently do shorten suspensions, even with the Cubs. Barrett last year is the only recent Cub suspension I remember that wasn't reduced.

Remember Kenny Rogers 2 years ago got suspended for shoving the cameraman and he played in the All-Star game despite suspension.

Ward has been real solid this year, I think (hopefully) dropping it down to 3 or 4 games will be worth the wait and Ward will provide a nice replacement when ever the decision is heard.

If I wad DLee my #1 argument for getting this reduced is to point out the guy that threw at him, and said whatever he said isn't going to be missing any starts.

argument #2 would be, the umpires really dropped the ball in controlling the situation.
