Seattle Mariners manager Mike Hargrove resigned in stunning fashion Sunday afternoon.

Hargrove will officially leave his post with the Mariners following Sunday's game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bench coach John McLaren will manage the Mariners for the remainder of the season, the team announced.

Wow-if you had said before the season that Hargrove would be gone by mid-season, I don't think anybody would have questioned it. The Mariners are playing way over their head though, and that makes this sudden resignation absolutely shocking.

He says he lost the passion for the game. Must have some personal issues going on in his life as great as he has them playing for what we expected. Probably front runner for manager of the year in the AL

I picked the Mariners to win their division at the beginning of the season. LAA had a better rotation, but I felt the bats that Seattle assembled could keep pace with the Angels.

Something must be up with Hargrove.

isn't hargrove a pretty large man in regards to his belly?

i absolutely love hargrove as a manager. he's got a great philosophy.

that's stunning news.

Which is interesting, because Seattle is the type of team that I thought you couldn't stand Sulley. They swing early and try to put everything into play. They are last in the majors in walks and strikeouts while being middle of the league in stolen bases. Is that the result of the team being built completely differently than Hargrove wants?

but his cleveland teams were the most patient teams that ever existed, pretty much.

as a major league manager, with already developed players, i guess playing to players' strengths is more advisable than not. they could be more patient, but it seems to be working for them.

Hopefully McLaren can make the most of it, that's an ideal team for him (younger and aggressive) and he's had a very good relationship with Ichiro in the past.

While I'd rather see him go to a NL team, he's more than earned his due and hopefully Seattle can cont. what they've done and remove the interim tag.

(For those wondering, I wanted McLaren to replace Bruce Kimm)

the funny thing is that most everyone in the city of seattle was dying to get dusty baker after lou left.

i was surprised they passed over mclaren that year as well.

Most of the players wanted McLaren as well....

As did Carl Crawford and several D-Rays when Lou left TB.
