yea all that talk about momentum gone if we win this series is ridiculous....i mean they weren't gonna sweep this seris, imo...they needed to just win the series and win the other series because then they can just worry about pickin up 5.5 games somewhere else the rest of the way. so dammit cubs....WIN THE SERIES

Please be in April form Marquis.....PLEASE

If the Cubs win today, they'll be 6.5 back, not 5.5.

Better than 8.5 back.

I know that, I was just correcting him.

lol, I think that was sarcasm.

Yes, it's a two game swing. If we win we'll be 6.5 games back, if we lose it's 8.5 games.

no i kno they will be 6.5 back...im saying if you win today and win the other series against the brewers later you only have to worry about pickin up 5.5 games against other teams

Game Notes.

THE ROAD AHEAD: The Cubs, who had their season-high, 7-game winning streak snapped in a 13-4 loss vs. Milwaukee yesterday, play their final home game of the first half … Chicago is 4-1 in the first 5 games of this 6-game homestand against Colorado (3-0) and Milwaukee (1-1) …

tomorrow, the Cubs begin a 7-game trip with the first of 4 games against Washington, followed by a 3-game set at Pittsburgh before the Mid-Summer Classic, July 10 in San Francisco.

The team’s 7-game winning streak was its longest such run since a 7-game streak May 27- June 2, 2005.

The Cubs need a win in this rubber match to capture their third-straight series victory … it would be the first their first 3-series winning streak since April 27-May 6 in St. Louis (2-0), in Pittsburgh (2-1) and vs. Washington (3-0).

KEY ADDITIONS: Cubs starting pitchers Jason Marquis and Ted Lilly rank second and fourth in ERA among free agent starting pitchers who joined National League teams this season …

Marquis’ 3.46 ERA is second only to the Mets Orlando Hernandez, who sports a 2.78 ERA after pitching for Arizona and New York last season.

Lilly’s 4.03 ERA ranks fourth among free agent starters who joined N.L. clubs this season … San Diego’s Greg Maddux is third with a 3.66 mark.

Lilly’s .600 winning percentage (6-4) ranks tied for third-best with the Dodgers’ Randy Wolf among all starting pitchers who were free agents last off-season, behind Boston’s Daisuke Matsuzaka (9-5/.643) and Maddux (7-4/.636).

IF YOU GOT IT, FONT IT: Infielder Mike Fontenot enters today’s game with a 12-game hitting streak, the longest streak by an N.L. rookie this season and third-best among all rookies … Boston’s Dustin Pedroia had a 14-game streak and Tampa Bay’s Delmon Young had a 13-game streak.

Fontenot is just the third Cubs left-handed hitter to enjoy a streak of at least 12 games since the start of the 2000 season … it’s the longest streak by a Cubs left-handed batter

since Juan Pierre had a 14-game streak from August 8-22, 2006 … Todd Walker also had a 12-game streak in July of 2005.

Since his recall June 9, Fontenot is hitting .397 – that’s the second-highest average in the N.L. over that span (Philadelphia’s Chase Utley, .408).

More from the game notes....

THIS TIME LAST YEAR: Chicago enters July 1 with a 39-40 record, a 10-game improvement over their 29-50 mark last season entering July 1 … currently in second place and 7.5 back of the Brewers, the Cubs had found themselves fifth (14.5 back) this time last season … here’s comparison:

2007 Entering July 1 2006

39-40 (.494) Team Record 29-50 (.367)

.270 (754-for-2797) Team Batting Avg. .260 (698-for-2696)

74 Home Runs 65

.329/.420 On-Base Pct./Slugging Pct. .312/.392

4.00 (318 ER/715.1 IP) Team ERA 4.81 (371 ER/694.2 IP)

3.97 (210 ER/476.2 IP) Starters’ ERA 5.25 (254 ER/435.1 IP)

4.07 (108 ER/238.2 IP) Relievers’ ERA 4.06 (117 ER/259.1 IP)

.984 (46 E/2939 TC) Fielding Pct. .983 (49 E/2826 TC)

FIRST INNING FRUSTRATIONS: The Cubs have allowed a total of 9 first-inning runs over the first 2 games of this Milwaukee series ...yesterday, starter Sean Marshall threw 31 pitches and

allowed 4 runs (3 earned) in the opening frame after Rich Hill tossed 45 pitches and allowed 5 runs in the first inning of the Cubs’ 6-5 win Friday afternoon.

© Chicago has allowed 47 first-inning runs this season, the most runs the Cubs have

surrendered in any frame this season … conversely, Chicago’s 61 runs scored in the first inning is the most they’ve plated in any frame this year.

TOP TWO IN CENTRAL: This is the latest date in any season the Cubs and Brewers have met

while occupying the top-2 spots in the N.L. Central since Milwaukee joined the N.L. in 1998 …prior to this series, the latest these clubs had met while first and second in the division was June 14, 2001, when the Cubs had a 6-game lead over the Brewers, who were tied for second with Houston and St. Louis.

We need bullpen help - why is Pie wasting away here if he's just gonna be benched?

Why isn't Fontenot batting second?

I'm guessing because Fontenot has been slugging so well and driving in a bunch of runs that Lou wants to put him in more RBI positions by batting him near the middle of the order.

I think that's the case as well. Lou starts his lineup with Soriano, Lee, and Ramirez in their spots. Then he fills in his next best hitter at 5, then the next one at 6, then the next one at 2, then at 7, then at 8. Since Floyd is not playing today, DeRosa moves to 5 and Fontenot to 6, and then he apparently decided that Theriot was the better #2 hitter than Pagan so he put him there.

Ok, Then why is Soriano batting leadoff?

Because Soriano wants to leadoff and Lou is dumb enough to listen to him.

Ok, Then why is Soriano batting leadoff?

Because he's proven in his 8+ year career that he can't hit well, consistently, with RISP. All of his career numbers are better at leadoff.

... or is it just that Soriano is lousy at driving in runs ??

from the look of those flags. The Cubs will have several flyouts that might have been home runs and somehow the Brewers will poke a couple of balls out. That's how it usually goes.
