I think the Phillies could actually get decent value for Burrell if he would back off that no trade clause of his. He needs to get out of Philly, I have no idea was his problem is...Does he have some screws loose?

Like I said, everyone in Philly hates him, and he probably hates everyone in Philly.

Pat Burrell would very possibly be the worst defensive right fielder in major league history.

We would be howling for the defensive wizardry of Cliff Floyd within a week.

I'd be in favor of a Floyd / Burrell RF platoon situation. He has said previously that he would waive his NTC to go to Chicago. That may have been the Sox (last season) though.

I bet with PHL's pitching being in such dire straights right now, we might be able to peddle Eyre off on them too.

We don't really care about defense here @NSBB :P

Sacrificing offense for defense has been one thing that Piniella has been (rightly) willing to do for the most part.

I don't think the difference between Burrell and your average RF defender is much.

He's one of the worst defensive LF's in the game. That said, the easy solution is to move Soriano to RF.

Have you seen Matt Murton play RF? :D

I'm one of those who sacrifices defense for offense because defense is so hard to quantify. Burrell in RF would be a nightmare. I really think Philly would make the trade though. Burrell is this year's Abreu to Philly. Abreu was a far better player and they got nothing of value for him.

I would rather take a risk on Jermaine Dye.

I had that thought the other day when somebody was talking about the Sox calling it a year. What would they want in return? Pitching? IF, OF? Do we even have anything they're interested in?

Is there a possibility of sending Jones + a prospect to the Giants for Omar Vizquel.

Vizquel has been horrible this season, but he's in the last year of his contract. We'd be rid of Jones and Vizquel's contract expired. We might even get the Giants to take back Izturis, which would make the money exchanged pretty even.

Another possibility would be to move Jones in a deal to the Reds for Griffey or Dunn.

The Cubs would be adding salary in that deal, so the Cubs would probably have to increase the value of players going to the Reds. Jim might convince the Reds to take Jones to help offset the salaries the Cubs would be taking back.

A third possibility to move Jones, might be in a deal with Texas for Kenny Lofton.

Lofton is making six million this year. The Cubs likely still have to pay Jones' salary for next season, but the salaries even out for this season. The Cubs are going to have to include player or players with Jones, but that might be palatable. Getting Lofton might take some pressure off of Pie.

Another option while looking at Texas, would be Gagne. Like Lofton, Gagne's making six million this year. Getting him would be pricier, but if he's a target, then talking the Rangers into taking Jones could be possible.

We might also look at the Nationals. We could agree to take back Christian Guzman and toss in some prospects as well.

Guzman is injured and out for the rest of the year (yes, again). I don't think players are allowed to be traded while on the DL.

Money being an issue, I keep hoping that Hendry will find a way to trade Jones and his 1.5 years and $7M in a similar manner that he dealt Todd Hundley and his 2 years and $12M after the 2002 season.

Any ideas on that?

Given what Mr. Miles wrote in his column today about the Cubs having budget this year, but keeping alive the notion that they probably will not take on any contracts beyond this year, it would seem that if there is a player out there, who started the year being owed between $11 and $17M (prorated between $5.5 and $8.5M for the remainder of the season) and is in his walk year, that would be the type of player Hendry would target as a cash even or near cash even trade for Jones.

If OF, SS, C and pitcher are the positions for upgrade, I suppose guys like Suzuki, Bonds, ARod, Abreu, Kendall, Gagne, Buerhle, etc.. would be targets.

Izturis, Jones, and Eyre to PHL for Burrell. Gillick gives us the difference in Burrell's salary for next year so that the $$ washes.

The problem is Jimmy Rollins and Michael Bourn...if you are evening out salaries they are probably going to want something that they will use in return.

They asked SD for Greene and Linbrink in return for Dye. I wonder if they like Theriot. Hes the epitome of grinderball.
