i remember ba comparing wuertz to lidge (pre-pujols lidge, that is), and if marmol can continue to be so dominate, the end of this bullpen has a chance to be very good for a while. both are relatively young with live arms. let's just hope the next gm doesn't have a stick up his ass for the converted starter fad like hendry, and piniella uses them correctly (though the bullpen is the one part of his in game management that often scares me)...

marmol could be as good as any other reliever in baseball very soon.

He has all the tools to become an elite closer. However, I still question his ability to stay healthy down the road.

Given that he is a converted infielder, shouldn't it help that he has less mileage on his arm?

Depends on how you look at it. Some players are able to convert into becoming a pitcher and some end of blowing out their arms trying to. Im not going to go into the mechanical side of it because the majority of the people would not understand it.

so you're saying that some pitchers blow out their arms and some don't? fantastic analysis.

and if by "not understand it" you mean mock you relentlessly, then, yeah, we wouldn't understand.

Marmol is one pitch away from having the ceiling of a #3-4 starter. Dominant fastball and slider combo. If his changeup ever develops (probably not gonna happen in the pen) then he could start for a lot of teams.

the problem is, it's not going to develop pitching for the big club either. He'll have to go through some long growing pains, and they won't give him that chance. Plus it's not even certain that he'll be able to develop a change. I think it's better to be thankful you've got a good relief pitcher.
