In Muskat's latest pre-game writeup, there is a blurb that mentions Lou promising a surprise as to who will start at 2B tonight:

Player to watch

Who will play second base? With Ramirez back at third, it would seem that Mark DeRosa would be the likely candidate, but he couldn't start on Saturday because he felt ill after his dizzy spell in Texas. Also, Lou Piniella likes Mike Fontenot, so will he play? All Piniella would say is to expect a surprise.

Fontenot's value has never been higher. Since the Cubs are also trying to rid themselves of Jaque's contract, could they be packaged in a deal for a new, full-time 2B? DeRosa and Theriot seem to have the most value as supersubs...

Is there a potential suitor who would have a use for Jones (insert numerous "bag of baseballs" jokes here) and Fontenot - who could also give us a quality starter at 2B?

Discuss...

I would be suprised if Fontenot doesn't start at 2B and I'd be even more suprised if Jones and Fontenot are traded together.

outside of an unlikely but welcome trade of jaque izzy or eyre the only player i could really see as a surprise would be possibly soriano with a move back but that seems incredibly unlikely cuz noone should mess with the production hes had lately. I really dont see any possibly 2nd base accusitions, maybe luis castillo or something. My guess is that he just plans to play fontenot and sees that as a surprise over de rosa

EDIT: I highly doubt it with them wanting to add a pitcher and to add a hitter would be difficult but i wouldnt mind Epatt coming up

Out of the teams that have been in print as having interest in Jones, I have also heard/read that the Sox are considering moving Iguchi in their impending fire sale.

Any insight into why Lou would consider starting Fontenot at 2B a "surprise"?

It seems much more likely that the surprise is that DeRosa will play in RF or at SS tonight. The last thing the Cubs need is another second baseman-they already have DeRosa, who already is a little above average second baseman, Fontenot, who Lou says deserves to play also, along with Patterson in AAA.

He might assume a writer would be surprised Lou stuck with Fontenot at 2B even though DaRosa was no longer needed at 3B.

Because he likes to jerk the media around?

I doubt this will be anything big, though I'd like it to be.

The last big shocking surprise was Dempster to the rotation for 15 minutes.

Soriano?

I just wouldn't see the point of this, because it would mean derosa to LF and since De ro can handle 2b well enough it wouldn't make any sense.

the big news is...we are in the process of getting Griffey and they plan on Keeping Pie in center and putting floyd in left and Griffey in RF. Then put Soriano at 2b.

Lou is just planning ahead.

What are we giving up to get him?

The original post didn't say anything about it being someone not on the team. Just said there would be a surprise at 2b.

I don't ever read the first post, just the thread title and then 1-2 random posts in the thread, then reply.

This soon before the game, I'd bet there is no trade involved in Lou's comments. This means that there are only a few possibilities:

1) Fontenot (Pinellia thinks it is a surprise to play Fontenot over DeRosa for a day)

2) Called up Eric Patterson

3) Soriano shifts to 2B for a day (but who plays left?)

My money is on #1, the least surprising.
