Suntimes[/url]"]The Cubs reduced their pitching staff to 11 for only the second time this season when they optioned right-hander Sean Gallagher to Class AAA Iowa on Thursday to make room for the return of third baseman Aramis Ramirez (knee) from the disabled list today.

Sean we hardly knew ya!!

This a good move. Forces Lou not to overuse the pen and gets us what we need in terms of position player flexability. Too bad we have buried ourselves 8.5 back.

hopefully the days of Mark DeRosa batting 5th are long behind us

I can think of worse things than that. DeRosa batted 5th for 163 at-bats in Texas last year, and they finished 6th in the majors in runs last year. (note-I do get your point, but I've seen over and over again that example used that DeRosa batting 5th sometimes is something a good offense doesn't do, and there is evidence that it is not true). The lineup could definitely use the power boost that Ramirez will provide.

As far as Gallagher, I'm glad he got his feet wet in the majors, but I'm glad that they didn't wait any longer to send him down. Now he can get the innings he needs and continue to develop, and hopefully be a part of the Cubs come 2008.

Hello again, Yes it was great of the Cubs to think enough of Sean that they would give him a call-up this soon. This was a great "learning experience" for him and he recieved lots of encouragement from everybody in the organization. He needs to pitch and throw innings, it had to be tough on him to come out of the bullpen when he has been a starter his entire time in the minors. I know in talking with him that this experience has made him hungry to get back to Chicago and also that he knows what he needs to work on..... 8-)

Hope he is able to build off the experience. I don't like when teams treat position players like yo-yos, but it's not a bad thing to have a pitcher come up and get some exposure before going back and working on things. Hopefully Sean can build to the point where he's ready to fight for a rotation spot next spring (unless he's needed to fill a spot this year following a trade).

That's good to hear....even though things were a little rough for Sean, I can't imagine that anyone with half a brain doesn't realize that a player that young who is used to being a starter getting his first MLB experience is likely going to have some growing pains. Sean's numbers in the minors speak for themselves, and I know I and many others look forward to seeing him develop further and eventually be a starter for the Cubs.

Good for Sean, hopefully he does well at AAA. And great to have Aramis' bat back in the lineup.

I'm sure he's probably disappointed, but it's probably better for his career to pitch somewhere he can start and get plenty of innings. I'm sure he'll be called back in September anyway, maybe earlier depending on what trades go down.

I'm really glad Aramis is back, it increases the number of guys I actually enjoy watching hit on this team to 3.

Here's hoping Sean nails down a rotation spot in 2008. He showed good promise in his time here.

Gallagher to Iowa!!!! Sweet!!! I gotta make plans to go down and see him.

I wanted to see Pie one last time, but that didn't happen. I'll be at Sean's first start in Des Moines!

Sean travelled today to Cellular field with the club and was going to throw his bullpen session in the pen. He is scheduled to join Iowa sometime sat. and not sure when he is scheduled to throw....

I hope he's taking advantage of the per diem while he can.
