At this point the only thing I can hope for is that the Cubs absolutely implode to the point where Hendry has to get fired. They are merely sucking right now; they need another good dugout brawl to get back to the point of implosion.

Does McDonough fire Hendry at the All-Star break, wait until the end of the season, or does he just punt and wait for a new owner to step in?

Depends very much on ownership, but I'm not feeling optimistic so I'll say next May. Ownership will change hands sometime in the first quarter of 2008. By then it will be too late to make a change and Trib/McDonough will not bother with an overhaul at the last minute. The owner will allow lame duck Hendry to start the season, but will use the first sign of trouble as a reason to fire him, then they will spend the rest of the year figuring out what to do for 2009.

Thanks Andy.

He will probably be re upped for 4 more years. None of this is his fault, its all Michael Barrets, and he got rid of him so hes a genius now.

If the transition is that late, then I agree with goony.

Still, I wonder how much damage even Hendry can do when the team is in transition and everything is up in the air. I don't think we'll see anymore 136M or even 44M or 21M contracts handed out. The worst thing he can do is trade what remains of the farm system, and if that's going to happen, it will likely happen during this season anyway.

2008 is going to be a throw away year. The best we can hope for is that Hendry hasn't traded Soto,Pie,Cedeno,Veal,Gallagher,Patterson, and Marshall. If we have most of these guys back, we'll at least have some young players to throw out there and rebuild with.

I still think the Cubs should be sellers this season, but I would be surprised, nay, shocked, if Hendry puts the needs of the organization before his own job and legacy. I'd be mildly surprised if he even recognizes that this team, as currently constructed, is a .500 club at best.

Why would Hendry be fired?

We're competitive within the division.

The ballpark is full.

Merchandise is moving off the shelves.

Lots of people "getting their Cubs on".

Well put, Grace.

I'm very nervous that he's still at the controls.

As people on here know, I have no love at all for Hendry. To the point where I said after last season, he and Baker should go or they both should stay. Keeping one and not the other is just like keeping them both. Wish I had been wrong, but to this point, it looks as if I'm not.

I still think Ed Lynch was worse than Jim Hendry, but I respected him after learning he had offered two resignations to MacPhail before MacPhail accepted it. At least Lynch figured out he wasn't doing a good job. I actually think Hendry believes he's doing a pretty good job.

My opinion of Ed Lynch just went way up. I think he and Hendry were pretty equally bad as GMs. They both hired idiot former players to manage (Baker and Baylor). They both built the same piecemeal teams hoping over-the-hill vets would return to their glory days. They both got lucky once, and each time it was mainly due to the offensive production of a single player, Sosa, a tremendous contribution from a rookie pitcher, and some overachieving veterans. The 98 team had a lot better offense and the 03 team had better pitching, but neither were, in my opinion a particularly well put together team. The 03 team was better because at the end of the day, great pitching wins more games than great hitting.

And it also helps when you have a miracle weekend where the awful, awful Brewers beat the Astros. But I get your point.

Studies have proven that isn't true... but whatever.

On occasion I can convince myself that being a professional golfer some day in the future is a possibility.

Everyone deludes themselves in some ways.
