I've been waiting for us to dump Barrett for a catcher with a shred of defensive and game-calling ability since 2004.

With all the extra drama lately, good riddance.

Anybody think it's worth noting the huge ERA increase by Cub pitchers when Barrett caught? Possible correlation or just coincidence?

Oh, jesus. I should just leave this thread before I end up spending half my day here.

Come on...you wanna argue CERA...you know you do...give in to the dark side...

Besides, you know you're gonna be here all day anyway....

No way man. I took the day off and am going to the planetarium with a bunch of fine ladies. 8-)

you spelled apologist wrong :D

Sounds like a defense and chemistry trade to me, which I don't like.

I think they are also sacrificing offense, which they can't afford to do.

But I've never really liked Barrett, and I wanted him to walk at the end of the year anyway. At least this pretty much guarantees they don't do something stupid like offer him a longterm contract this November.

I don't like that catcher is now manned by nothing but defensive backup kind of catchers. A bunch of 8 hitters on a team already dealing with 8 hitters at SS.

I don't think this trade makes the Cubs any better.

By itself I don't think it makes the Cubs better. If this is the first in a series of trades, that could change my mind, but right now...I'm just kinda "meh" about this. Barrett wasn't lighting the world on fire this season, and he was a FA after the season, so....meh.

FWIW I think Bowen is overrated here...He is complete and utter crap.

I've seen the arguments for him spelled out...can you do the same from the other side?

703 career OPS.

Cause that .756 career OPS for a terrible defensive catcher is astounding

Bowen is also terrible defensive catcher.

Really, you're sticking to that huh? Just because he hasn't thrown out baserunners while catching a staff that's notorious for their inability to hold runners?

You make generalizations and rush to judgment on things which you aren't very familiar with more than anyone I've seen on this board. Keep ignoring those scouting reports talking about his defensive ability though.

Maddux is the only one on that staff that can't hold runners. To throw their pitching staff out as an excuse for his peformance behind the plate is a copout.

And as I stated earlier, the San Diego broadcast team and color analysts couldn't wait for this guy to get out of town. And they follow the team on a daily basis.

You would be wrong on the first count.

I'm also guessing that you're exaggerating on the second paragraph.

You can guess all you want, but that was the synopsis of their feelings on the trade. If anyone else was listenting they will say the same thing.

ALERT!!!! THIS TRADE WAS ABOUT GETTING RID OF BARRETT!!!! NO ONE SHOULD EXPECT EQUAL VALUE!!!!

that doesn't make it right.

i'm not against the move, per say. but i am against trading someone just to get rid of him if he still has some value.

I agree for the most part, but am I the only one who thinks it appears that Bowen has some offensive upside? He's been productive at appropriate ages for his level a few years.

I don't know about him long-term, but I think he can be at least adequate at catcher if not a little better.

Possibly a little upside. Catchers do sometimes take more time to develop. But his upside probably gets nowhere near Barrett at his peak. He's probably even a step down from somebody like Damian Miller.

so what? Marty Brenneman would buy the plane ticket to get Adam Dunn out of town, does that mean he sucks too?

It means that Marty Brenneman sucks.

Im pretty much in this camp right here with Jersey. As it stands right now, the Cubs are not any better than they were with Barrett. The offense is still the weakness on this team. If they make another trade for a bat, that might make this trade look better.

Defense isn't the problem for this team right now, its the offense.

correct. my point was who gives a crap what the Padres announcers think about this deal? If they're like 95% of team broadcasters, they toe the company line and praise the team for whatever they do

I like Bowen.........

as a back up. Unfortunately, the Cubs needed a starting catcher.

Barrett and the Cubs probably needed a change of scenery.

Cubs receive a downgrade on offense, but an improvement defensively.

if it's a statistical wash but has removed drama/tension from the clubhouse, then it did it's job.

Our offense isn't good enough to trade offense for defense.

Again, I'm pretty indifferent on this, but we still need to upgrade SS or RF. This deal didn't get us any closer to that, unless SD is giving us a lot of cash.

Barrett is not a catcher for a winning team.

He can hit.... not much else

Yeah, good thing Barrett was traded from a winning team to a losing team.

Oh wait....

I'm at work and can't read the whole thread, do we know the exact deal?

Nay.

Thanks. What's the speculation then? The Barrett+EPatt for Bowen+Linebrink deal from the 1st page?

no, Barrett for Bowne and Kyler Burke (Low-A OF on Fort Wayne). Cash is moving, but it's unclear who is getting it
