... in a Bill Madden article about the Cubs and Sox.

"For all the expensive wheeling and dealing done by GM Jim Hendry over the winter, he can expect heavy prodding from his manager to get a power relief arm - a la Texas' Eric Gagne - in the weeks leading up to the trading deadline.

Intriguing thought especially if the Cubs stay close through July. $6M base salary for 2007 + performance bonuses for games finished. Free agent after 2007. An expiring contract - exactly the type Jim Hendry can take on at the deadline, especially if a finds a taker for Eyre, Jones, Barrett, etc...

Yep, the closer is our problem.

Yeah, I understand this 3 weeks ago when the bullpen was in shambles, but with the emergence of Marmol and the resurgence of Howry to go with Dempster and Wuertz, I don't really see a big need for another late inning reliever.

We have a 13 man staff already....

Don't we need to get rid of some of the relief pitchers we have before we trade for another one. Getting Gagne wouldn't be a bad move if it didn't cost a lot. I don't think a closer is going to make the difference in getting the team to the playoffs, though.

Only if the Cubs don't have to pay for his HGH.

Oh here we go.

(But I do think the Bud Light Bleachers or the Walter E. Smith dugout advertisement revenue will cover that)
